ATLANTA, Jan. 16 -- Academy Award-winning actor Whoopi Goldberg will star in and Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Garth Brooks will contribute Christmas songs to the upcoming Turner Network Television (TNT) Original film CALL ME CLAUS, a heartwarming comedy about the true meaning of Christmas, it was announced today by Julie Weitz, executive vice president of original programming, TNT, and Helen Verno, executive vice president of movies & miniseries for Columbia TriStar Television.

HOLLYWOOD It's never too early to plan for Christmas 2001. Garth Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg are teaming up for ``Call Me Claus,'' a two-hour Yuletide musical set to air on cable's TNT in December.

Goldberg will star as a home shopping network producer who hires an actor to play Santa Claus, but the thesp actually turns out to be Santa himself. Nigel Hawthorne, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Victor Garber will co-star.

Singer-songwriter Victoria Shaw has written hits for such country acts as Garth Brooks ("The River", "She's Every Woman"), John Michael Montgomery ("I Love The Way You Love Me"), and Trisha Yearwood ("Where Your Road Leads"), and can now add pop music to her list of credits.

The tunesmith co-wrote "Nobody Wants To Be Lonely", a song recorded by Ricky Martin and performed by the Latin superstar Monday (January 8) night at the American Music Awards. Martin will release it as a single to radio as a duet with Christina Aguilera.

Shaw has yet to meet the Latin heartthrob but says she's not too concerned about it, "as long as they spell my name correctly on the checks!" Shaw quipped to The Tennessean.

Garth Brooks Co. To Make Movie

PASADENA, Calif. - Although country singer Garth Brooks has announced his retirement, he's not going to be idle.

The 38-year-old Brooks told reporters backstage at the People's Choice Awards Sunday night that his movie production company will make a statement about its first project in about 10 days.

He said despite expectations, it won't be ``The Lamb'' his film about his fictional rock-star alter ego, Chris Gaines.

'``The Lamb' is still Paramount's baby, and if Paramount says we're going forward with this ... and if they're crazy enough to let me do the soundtrack, I'll go back in and do it, even though it was the hardest thing I've ever done. ... the Chris Gaines project,'' he said.

Brooks won the male musical performer award at the People's Choice Awards.

A Burien teacher who says she was given lousy seating at a Garth Brooks concert because she uses a wheelchair is being permitted to go forward with her lawsuit against Seattle, but whether she can still go after the popular country-music singer remains to be seen.


Judge rules in Garth Brooks' favor in suit by disabled woman

Garth Brooks has no obligation to provide front-row seating for people in wheelchairs, a judge said yesterday, disappointing an advocate for the handicapped who claimed the entertainer unfairly made room for pretty women over people with disabilities.

In a hearing at the King County Superior Court, Judge Kathleen Learned ruled in the country singer's favor in several injunctions, essentially eliminating Brooks from a lawsuit and placing the burden on KeyArena management.
