PEORIA, Ariz. How it went for Garth Brooks on Tuesday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks didn't play in the Padres' 8-6 win over the Oakland Athletics.

HIGH NOTE: General manager Kevin Towers said the Padres' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas is asking every day whether Brooks is going to play in exhibition games against Milwaukee on April 2 and the Chicago White Sox on April 3, both at Las Vegas' Cashman Field. There are no guarantees that Brooks would get any at-bats, but his presence obviously would spur ticket sales, particularly for the Saturday afternoon game.

ON THE RECORD: ``We're going to talk to Garth in the next couple of days and see what his plans are," manager Bruce Bochy said. "If he'd like to accompany us, the door is certainly open."
