Garth Brooks' Day at Spring Training - March 17, 1999
Wednesday, March 17, 1999. The Associated Press

PEORIA, Ariz. - How it went for Garth Brooks on Tuesday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks didn't play in the Padres' game against the Giants at Scottsdale, but he will get his first start of the spring Wednesday when the Padres travel to Tucson to meet the Chicago White Sox. Brooks will play in left field and bat eighth, according to Padres manager Bruce Bochy. Brooks is 0-for-13 in all games this spring, including intrasquads, ``A'' and ``B'' games.

HIGH NOTE: As usual, Brooks signed a lot of autographs.

ON THE RECORD: ``We've got some outfielders hurt, and with an off day Thursday, I want to give some guys Wednesday off, too,'' Bochy said. ``So this will be Garth's chance.''
