Garth Brooks' Day on the Diamond
Tuesday, March 02, 1999. Associated Press
PEORIA, Ariz. - Here's how it went for Garth Brooks on Tuesday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:
COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks played in the Padres' intrasquad game, taking over in left field in the top of the seventh and striking out in his only at-bat. He cleanly handled the one ball hit to him, a single.
LOW NOTE: With a runner on first and one out, Brooks had a decent at-bat against non-roster righty Salvador Rodriguez, fouling off two pitches before chasing a neck-high fastball for strike three. He also had to be reminded by manager Bruce Bochy to remember to put on his batting helmet.
ON THE RECORD: ``It was cool. I guess four out of the five pitches I was proud of. The last one I wasn't. That's the one I'll remember. I was there. That's why I was apologizing to my teammates. I was there. The guy on first has to be moved over and it was my job to do it.'' - Brooks.
