Huge party honors ‘retiring’ Garth Brooks’ sale of 100 million albums

A decade of hits and an unprecedented 100 million albums sold are enough, country music superstar Garth Brooks said yesterday, just before 1,150 friends and colleagues gathered at a black-tie party to celebrate his success.
Well, nearly enough.
After 10 years on Capitol Records, the 38-year-old is now the top-certified solo artist, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Citing family and career concerns, country music star Garth Brooks said Thursday he plans to retire after releasing and promoting one more album.
``I'm here to announce my retirement,'' Brooks said at a news conference before a gala to celebrate 100 million album sales.

Brooks used the momentous weekend as an opportunity to answer questions about his uncertain career. At an Oct. 14 press conference, the multi-platinum country star promised that he will announce in the coming weeks if he's ready to come out of his "retirement" and release a new record. Brooks said he's more likely to release new music now that the proposed Warner-EMI merger has been cancelled.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Grand Ole Opry turned 75 on Saturday with country music's royalty - Garth Brooks, Loretta Lynn and Travis Tritt among them - leading the party.
Brooks, one of country's biggest stars and the closing act for two nights of shows, sang his hits ``Two of a Kind (Working on a Full House),'' ``Friends in Low Places'' and ``The Dance.''
