I got my new newsletter from Chris LeDoux and he wrote
Cute huh!!!
He also wrote " Thanks for sending all the cards, letters and prayers. I know they helped" and most of all
"I want to thank God for giving me, at least, this much extra time to walk this good earth in this great country among these wonderful people that I know!"
I say GOD BLESS CHRIS LEDOUX!!!!!!!

    This really is kind of a big deal. From what I know of the "living donor" concept, the science behind it is still relatively knew. I believe that only a few transplant centers are performing this type of procedure. I've also heard it is pretty tough on the donor involved. That makes me all the more impressed with Garth!

    RE: A message from Chris LeDoux to Garth!

    If anyone thinks THEY may want to be a living donor for someone... here are the requirements as listed by the USC Liver Transplant Program and Center for Liver Disease:

Basic facts regarding the donor:

The donor could either be a relative (close or distant) or even be unrelated.

The blood type of the donor should be the same as the recipient's.

The donor should be in good physical and mental health.

The decision to be a donor should be made after careful consideration of facts and knowledge of the procedures, the risks and complications.

There should be no evidence of financial gain arising out of the donation.

The donor must be relatively close in size (or larger) than the recipient.

What constitutes a good donor?

A good donor is someone who is in good physical and mental health, older than the age of 18 and free from:

* HIV infection
* Known viral hepatitis
* Active alcoholism with frequent and heavy alcohol intake
* Psychiatric illness under treatment
* History of malignancy
* Heart and lung disease requiring medications
* Diabetes mellitus of greater than 7 years duration

What is the process for evaluating a donor?

The potential donor will be asked to complete a questionnaire that includes attaching a copy of his or her blood type (to confirm whether this is compatible with the recipient).

If the blood type is compatible with that of the recipient and the details on the questionnaire indicate suitability, the donor is evaluated by an internist (liver specialist or hepatologist) who will obtain additional history, perform a physical examination and administer appropriate blood and urine tests.

If the physical examination and tests confirm that the donor is suitable and the donor's size (height/weight compared to that of the recipient) is appropriate, a CT scan will be arranged to calculate the volume of liver that will permit a successful outcome. [Prior to having the CT scan the donor must notify the team of any allergies to iodine or radioiodinated contrast.]

At this stage, the potential donor will also be interviewed by a social worker from our team. Under some circumstances, a psychiatric evaluation may be appropriate.

When complete, the medical and social details of the evaluation are discussed at a conference by the transplant team members.A decision regarding the suitability of the donor will be made at that time. This decision will be communicated to the donor by one of the team members (usually the transplant coordinator). If not selected, physician team members can be contacted for explanation. [All information concerning the donor is kept in strict confidence.]

    RE: A message from Chris LeDoux to Garth!

    Snow--why exactly does the donor have to be larger than the recipient? I'm assuming it has to do with the idea that the larger person would have more organ to give up a portion of, but I'm not sure.

You know, as much as Garth doesn't want to be thought of as a hero, if he had been able to do that, he never would have been able to live down the title. N

    RE: A message from Chris LeDoux to Garth!

    Meli... I'm not certain, but your explaination makes very good sense. I'm sure it's the reason.

The liver is one of the only organs that will actually grow after being transplanted. It was an early success story in transplants, particularly in children. If a baby or small child needed a liver, the parent (or suitable donor) could donate a portion of their liver and it would grow with the child.

That version of the liver transplant has been used for many years.

In adults though they have always relied on livers donated from the recently deceased. Only in the last few years have they been doing living donor liver transplants in adults.

As long as Chris LeDoux's liver remains free of disease and no other complications from other areas arise he should have an excellent prognosis. A very lucky man.

If only other organs could be so easily transplanted.

My husband was on the heart transplant list for a while, but because of improved treatment and medications he actually was taken off... and we hope he'll stay off! Heart transplants still only typically have a 5 year average lifespan before rejection or other problems.... though some have lived much longer. WE want to put it off as long as possible... every year adds better improvements to the transplant survivablity prospects.N

    So is Chris accepting the liver? Is he doing ok? Would any one here give Chris your liver? Don't you still need you liver? I thought we all had to have one? If I were to give him my liver, wouldn't I have to have one too? I would give him my liver but I don't think I'm bigger than him. :) How big is Chris? How can you not help but Love that guy? Actually how can you not help to love BOTH those guys!

    RE: A message from Chris LeDoux to Garth!

    Janet,
I work in the transplant field, but in the area of the deceased donor rather than the living donor. Snow probably knows more about this than I do, but I'm going to give it a shot until she gets here. I asked another transplant coordinator friend of mine about the concept of the living donor several months ago, and I believe she told me that only a relatively small piece of the liver is taken, which, in time, regenerates (replaces itself). As far as Chris is concerned, the answer is "no", he did not receive any or all of Garth's liver. I believe Chris received the more traditional type of transplant, from a brain-dead donor. I may be wrong about this--could have been a living donor, but I know that donations from deceased donors are much more common at this time (for liver donations, that is), so I think we would have heard more about it if it had come from a living donor. Organ donations on the whole are not nearly common enough, though, so as Snow and I have pointed out before, please remember to sign your donor cards and talk this over with your family everyone! Or like the bumper sticker on my car says, "Don't take your organs to heaven...Heaven knows we need them here!"

    Good job Jenny... that is just what they do. They only take a portion of the liver.

The liver being the only major organ (other than the skin) that can regenerate... so it will grow once transplanted. :)

    Good job Amy! Me too... but everyone also needs to know that putting that sticker on your license and registering is just the first step.

You must talk to your family and make them understand your choice and the reasons why.

When a person with a donor card dies the hospital still has to get the approval of the family. There have been cases where the relatives of the people just couldn't face the decision and didn't let the hospital go through with it. How sad that is when someone needs that organ, the potential donor WANTED to give the organ, and because of not understanding... the family still does not allow it. :(N

    A good way to make sure your wishes are honored is to add the Organ Donor Statement to your Will. That's what I did! I sent copies (of that part of my Will along with DNR instructions) to my local hospitals and my family physician.

No mistaking then what your desires are! A simple addition to the Will does it!
