Lyric question re: Chris Gaines' "Digging for Gold"

This has been bothering me for years now, so bear with me.

In the first verse of the Chris Gaines' album song "Digging for Gold," there's a lyric that begins, "There are always questions in the heart of a millionaire." Now, every lyric website I've come across claims the next line is "Would she make heartfelt promises if the money was not there?" But the word Garth sings before "promises" sounds NOTHING like the word "heartfelt." I know lyric websites are frequently unreliable so I'm convinced this isn't the correct lyric. Does anyone know what the right lyric is? Apologies in advance if this has been discussed before. Thanks!

I’ve always sang it as “lifelong” promises.

I always thought it was "would she make those promises"

There's an extra syllable in the song, though.

This might be it! Glad to see I'm clearly not the only one who's struggled with this lyric, though.
