    Full lyrics:

We took Ventura Highway to the Sunshine State
Where they raised their hands to Jesus
    as they passed the plate
Oh, and every day we spent there
    was Valentine's day
    There's a new team,
    out in Queens, 8teen

And the girl made in Japan was made for me to hold
When Vincent lent an ear the night the thunder rolled
And the ride we took together was a rodeo
    Big dreams, six strings, 8teen

And for everyone born 8teen runnin' wild and free
From the pearly gates of Heaven to the fiery sea
Know that each will teach of passage
    through the trinity
God's gifts runneth 'ore my cup
Call it a blessing or you call it luck
It all adds up to 8teen

And we heard about the letters kept beside his bed
And how he never could forget her
    or the words she said
That will forever be enshrined and underlined in red
Such sad scenes, so pristine, 8teen

He rode that silver bullet 'cross the borderline
    There beneath the maple leaf
    signed to the Nimbus 9
And the song he hummed that night
    moves me every time
    Fourteen, and so green, 8teen

And for everyone born 8teen runnin' wild and free
From the pearly gates of Heaven to the fiery sea
Know that each will teach of passage
    through the trinity
God's gifts runneth 'ore my cup
Call it a blessing or you call it luck
It all adds up to 8teen

    Forever frozen in time
    The night the miracle occurred
They walked on water in my mind
    JC and Uncle Herb
Though we never heard the words
It all adds up to 8teen

And for everyone born 8teen runnin' wild and free
From the pearly gates of Heaven to the fiery sea
Know that each will teach of passage
    through the trinity
God's gifts runneth 'ore my cup
Call it a blessing or you call it luck
It all adds up to 8teen

"There beneath a maple leaf, inside a Nimbus 9..." A Bob Seger reference....

A Canadian ("maple leaf") sound production company called "Nimbus 9."..

"Nimbus 9 article" (also an obituary....)

And am I the only one hearing the lines starting at 4:22 during the fade out....?

    "Once a marine
    Met a Colleen
but it all adds up to Eighteen

    And the last scene
    From this Norman teen
    adds Eighteen."

    Well, I figured it out...
    That last line is

    "And the last scene
    From Miss Norma Jeane
    Adds Eighteen"

    Spoiler alert.......

It's Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Mortensen.. died 1962...adds up to 18)

Since the video response to Garth’s challenge was given on tonight’s Inside Studio G, I figured I’d share the notes I have been taking on what I thought before I read anyone else’s ideas or listened to the rest of Inside Studio G.

The first verse I figured out relates to his time with the Mets (there’s a new team out in Queens). Ventura Highway (Robin Ventura played with the Mets while Garth did spring training with them); the spring training took place in Florida (the Sunshine State); they pass the plate (home plate); Bobby Valentine was the manager of the Mets (Valentine’s Day) or Valentine’s Day may have been when he was officially put on the roster; and there are 18 players in a game. I haven’t figured out the Jesus reference yet.

For the rest of the verses and the chorus, I couldn’t connect the dots at all but had guesses for some of the clues: In the second verse, the only references I could come up with were to songs: Vincent (Starry, Starry Night), Thunder Rolls and Rodeo. For the chorus, again the only references I could come up with were to songs: American Pie (trinity) and Unanswered Prayers (God’s gifts). In the third verse, I found references to Beaches of Cheyenne (the words she said) and maybe Red Strokes (underlined in red). In the fourth verse, I came up with a reference to Bob Seger (Silver Bullet, Night Moves and beneath the maple leaf since he came from Michigan, which is immediately south of Canada). I have no clue what the reference is to the Nimbus 9 is. The only “Nimbus” I know is the broom in the Harry Potter books, but that was a Nimbus 2000. For the fifth verse, I could only come up with some guesses for JC (Cowboy Jack Clement, Johnny Cash, Jasper County and Jesus Christ) but couldn’t come up with anything for Uncle Herb. Other than the 18 in the first verse, I couldn’t figure out any of the other references to 18.

The first fade-out is obvious: once a marine met a Colleen. As for the second fade-out, I came up with a few Norma Jeans but couldn’t connect the dots to come up with a reference to 18. There was Norma Jean Lutz, an author from Tulsa; Norma Jean Beasler, who sang with Porter Wagoner and is from Oklahoma; and Marilyn Monroe, whose real name was Norma Jean Baker (the latter was also a guess by someone here, but I didn’t read any more once I realized he or she was giving an explanation).

    Paula

Edit: I did come up with one other "18" reference and that was to the addition of the numbers in the year Garth was born.

Wow...just read the thread. You all came up with some great explanations for the hidden clues. I wonder if he'll ever confirm what they all are.

I was wondering if he was talking about what he was experiencing at that age in Oklahoma, because Miracle on Ice happened the same year "He Stopped Loving Her Today" wwas released, 1980. But I also got the Buck Owens, Seger, McLean, and America references as well. What denomination were the Brookses growing up? (the Bible references in the chorus)
    Still a good song.

I know I'm a little late to this party but I also saw that Vincent Van Gogh died on July 29, 1890. That would be another set of 18s. 1890: 1+8+9+0=18 and July is the 7th month making another 7+2+9=18. Then if you add both 18s together, you get another 1+8+1+8=18. I'm sure this cycle can go on forever with a variety of dates and things but maybe it is just luck (or a blessing) that everything adds up to 18!
