Definitely. Now, if we can just get a couple "radio" songs on Gunslinger, it will be perfect.

I thought to myself with this massive tour he's sure got a good shot, but boy did I ever jump up when he actually won it!
Hopefully we get some new music all over radio soon!

They finally got it right! Here's a Facebook Live meeting with the press backstage after winning the award.

Wow!! 2 shocking events in one night! Garth actually won (I didn't think he would- CONGRATS GARTH!) and the Cubs win the world series!!!

Very cool- a lot of videos to capture/download from Facebook, etc. and maybe have to cut the CMA show up into pieces that I can save better

Agreed, I was pleasantly shocked tonight too. Happy about both.
Not a huge Cubs fan, but out of the two teams, I wanted them to win.

    Called it.

"If I recall, Garth did win EOTY for the CMA's in the fall of 1997. Sevens wasn't released until November and the first single had just dropped in Aug. Fresh Horses came out in '95 and by summer of 97 was on its last legs. Garth won that year based off his touring and the Ireland and New York shows. A win this year is conceivable with the amount of touring and the huge venues...Vegas, Yankee Stadium...he's been doing as of late.

Remember, in 97 George Strait had a big year with Carrying Your Love With Me, he won Male Vocalist and Album.

AND in 97, EOTY was the only category Garth was nominated in...just like this year.

    I think it's possible "

AND just like 1998, he's gonna win next year too.

I am reminded of the famous exchange from Sunset Boulevard When someone tells aging actress Norma Desmond, "You used to be in pictures. You used to be big," she replies, "I am big. It is the pictures that got small." Doesn't it seem like those who "used to be big" on country radio can still be big because country radio has gotten small (thanks to itunes and such, though, in Garth's case, obviously the kinds of live shows he does are a factor in his winning so many awards.)

I used to say I didn't understand country radio refusing to play songs "because they're not popular," because I thought country radio playing them would make them popular. Now, I am less certain that that is true.

It is possible, I suppose, to argue that male artists stay "big" longer after they get a little older than the female ones do. What is (or isn't) going on for Trisha now might indicate that. But then again, look at Reba.

Someone I know from a songwriting organization told me that some artists from the 90s are sort of considered "indie" now...but not so Trisha...she's still considered "viable."

I was shocked. I was really hoping for it, but I was certain they were going to give to Luke Bryan or Carrie Underwood.
