May 2, 2003 on this day:
In 1890 the U.S. Congress created the Territory of Oklahoma. Succumbing
to pressure from the public, Congress opened this last Indian Territory to
settlers. President Benjamin Harrison announced the time of the opening as
noon, April 22, 1889. On that morning a hundred thousand people lined the
Oklahoma borders and when the signal dropped they rushed in claiming land.
By the end of the day they had claimed 12,000 homesteads and almost two
million acres of land. Oklahoma City, a spot on the prairie, had ten
thousand people by nightfall.
