    The Baseball

this poem is (to me, anyway) kinda like a simple reminder that, even if we dont know it, those closest to us remember even our smallest accomplishments.

I knew a man who was my Little League coach
And also the world's best dad.
He helped me out when I was in the field
And encouraged me in every at bat.

But those careless summer days ended,
    In what seemed to me all to soon;
For dad was diagnosed with a tumor on his brain
With nothing the doctors could do.

At his bedside, we talked a lot
Of our memories and games we had won.
Somehow we even got on the subject
    Of my very first homerun.

Of course, he told me how proud he had been
And how much he loved me, too.
But then he said, "Stop by tomorrow,
I'll have something to give to you."

Next morning came and I stood at his side,
    Tears streaming down my face.
"Don't cry, sweetpea," he softly said,
"For I'm going to a better place.

"When you get there many years from now,
We can play baseball together again."
Then he slowly, shakily reached over
And placed an old baseball in my hand.

    "June 16th, 1980"
Were the last words dad had to say.
Then he looked up and smiled at me
    And peacefully passed away.

The words written on that dirty old baseball
Are the ones I'll never forget.
In faded black ink said "Sweetpea's first homer:
The best Father's Day present I could get."

    Hey Melissa...

Did YOU write that?! Aren´t you quite young?

Man, you got me with that!!!

Very good and another deep shower!

    Is it autobiographed?

    Thanks for sharing!

    Very well done! Very well!

thanks, you really brightened my day with that. yeah, i did write it, and im 13, not really too young. its not really autobiographed, but i wrote it thinkin about my mom. she had pre-cancerous tumors in her stomach, but she took chemo and prevented them from becoming cancerous. i felt like i sorta knew what the character in the poem was feeling, but definately not to the extreme of her father's passing away. thanks again for replying!

Melissa, thank you very much for clearing that up.

Sure you´re not too young to think about it like you did. But you were too young for the date ("June 16th, 1980"), you know? That confused me a bit.

I´m very sorry to hear about your mom. Did you show her that lovely poem? You should ~ to make her see how much you love her.

I´ll keep you & your mom in my prayers from now on. Cause one´s for sure! You ARE too young for what that kid went through. I think you´ll agree.

    Keep the faith!

And whenever you need somebody to talk call me!

    Huggs!

thanks maddy! i did show her the poem; she said it made her wanna cry, but i think she was overexaggerating. shes doin great now; her hair's grown back to the length she wants it to be (she can actually style it now, not just comb it a lil bit! ). thank you for the prayers! by the way, i used the date in that poem just because, if i ever got lucky and the poem was published, i wanted people to think that im older than i really am. i know its a lil bit confusin; sorry bout that!
scott, i was thinkin about "the greatest" too when i wrote that.

    Hey Melissa!
Great that you showed your mom the poem. I am sure she understood it. Very cool!

You made me laugh about the date thing. Hey, I can understand it. Very funny!

I didn´t know that song from Kenny Rogers. I found the lyrics. It´s really a little like that. I like it ~ both.

Once again thanks for sharing. Always feel free to show some more and keep it going!

Wow, powerful stuff Melissa! You brought me to tears! I want you to know that is one beautiful poem. And you're right. It is the smallest accomplishments that are remembered by the ones who love us most. How beautiful. You should find out about copyrighting that poem too young lady! Tell your mother, ok? It shouldn't surprise me to see such a talented young person at this website...but then this is Garth Brooks' website! Yep! You go girl! Keep up the great job of writing AND being a wonderful daughter as I'm sure you are.

    God bless.
