    6ABC Celebrates Welcome America

    PHILADELPHIA, July 5 /PRNewswire/ -- July 4th was an historic, star-studded day and night in Philadelphia, and it was brought to a record number of viewers over 7-1/2 hours of live programming on Channel 6/WPVI-TV.

    The day started with a bang at 7 a.m., when Diane Sawyer & Charlie Gibson anchored Good Morning America live from Independence Hall, and weatherman Tony Perkins live at the Art Museum. Good Morning America, the highest rated national morning show in Philadelphia, averaged a 7.1 rating, 23 share from 7-9 a.m.

    At 10 a.m., Channel 6 began live coverage of the Liberty Medal Presentation to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Wally Kennedy hosted, and Action News anchor Jim Gardner contributed to the program, which averaged an 8 rating and 18 share, the highest audience levels ever for that ceremony.

    At 7 p.m., Action News anchors Lisa Thomas-Laury and Dave Roberts kicked off the evening festivities that began with the Pennsylvania ``Memories Last a Lifetime'' parade. The events continued with musical performances by Philadelphia native Jill Scott and the Philly Pops, a guest appearance by country music giant Garth Brooks, and a celebrity reading of the Declaration of Independence by movie stars, including Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Winona Ryder, and Whoopi Goldberg. The night was capped off by a brilliant display of fireworks over the Art Museum.

    From 7 to 11:15 p.m., the audience averaged a 14 rating/25 share, peaking at a 24.5 rating/42 share at 11 p.m. The national portion of the telecast, from 10-11 p.m., averaged a 20.7 rating/32 share on Channel 6. Across the country, more than 7 million viewers got to see Philadelphia at its finest, with a national rating of a 4.6/10 share. Police estimate more than a million people lined the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to enjoy the show in person.

    Action News following the special at 11:15 p.m. averaged a 17.4 rating, 36 share.

    Channel 6/WPVI-TV is the official television sponsor of Welcome America, Philadelphia's non-profit organization that produces the 4th of July festivities.

    WPVI-TV/6ABC is the ABC owned-station serving the greater Philadelphia region.

    I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day!!!
