Note to moderators. This post starts out focusing on the music of REO Speedwagon, but I wanted to let others know this topic is not meant to be about that band but a starting place for US gathering together around the fire and sharing stories of how Garth has encouraged us as individuals. Just a thought, hopefully not a lame one, to offer another chance to let it all out among friends. If you want you can move it over to Open or Other Artist forums. Thanks. DaleN

I was watching REO Speedwagon's video anthology today when I was struck by the lead singer's(Kevin Cronin) introduction to the song "Ridin' the Storm Out". He describes what it is like to see the Rocky Mountains for the first time and to climb to the top only to find...
"The sun was coming down and the wind was coming up and there was big ol' dark storm clouds coming in from the west. We knew(the band) we were in trouble people, but we did 'what ya gotta do' when you're in trouble. And that is 'stick together, keep each other warm, and always keep riding the storm out'. Come on!" Of course, the stage is filled with much lightning and thunder effects.

Ok Brian, here's where you come in. I'm hoping you show up as usual. I just know I can count on you to do this for us. Could you find and post the lyrics to REO's following songs? Thanks ol' faithful buddy!

Keep the Fire Burning
Ridin' the Storm Out

and also later:
Roll with the Changes
In My Dreams

or any others you think fits

Ok. I'll sit here by the fire and wait for some friends to show up who need help riding this storm out too. I know there must be others out there looking for shelter and a place to keep warm and dry.N

Hey Dale! :)

Remember not long ago I posted that I wondered if Garth liked REO Speedwagon, because they were one of my favorite all-time rock-n-roll bands? We were on the subject of him listening to James Taylor, KISS, Chris LeDoux, etc.????? Whoa momma! :P This band was one of those that could rock AND have meaningful words. I Love 'em! I listened to REO the most in the late 70's and early 80's, and still do. Get this! Kevin Cronin and I share the same birthday, Oct. 6th! :) I think I have all the words memorized.....My all-time favorite is "Back On The Road Again" for the wonderful long-rockin' ballad it is! Well...it's 'time for me to fly!' :) Gotta make room for Brian. Who's Brian?! LOL Heyyyy Brian! :) Can you bring some wood for the fire? :P
I don't know much about REO Speedwagon though:rolleyes:

Keep The Fire Burnin'

Keep the fire burnin'
Let it keep us warm
The world will keep on turnin'
Let it turn you on
Let us not stop learnin'
We can help one another be strong
Let us never lose our yearnin'
To keep the fire burnin' all night long
You've been changing so much
I'm not sure your in touch with what's real
You just come and you go
Never letting me know how you feel
And I'm livin here in doubt
There's so much to talk about
I know that we can work it out

Chorus

We've been through this enough
It gets rough but there's nowhere to run
This is where we belong
We are strong, we can never give up
If we wanted to we could
But we've always understood
To keep lookin' for the good
:):):)
Ridin' The Storm Out

Ridin' the storm out, waitin' for the thaw out
On a full moon night in the Rocky Mountain winter.
My wine bottle's low, watching for the snow
I've been thinking lately of what I'm missing in the city.
And I'm not missing a thing
Watchin' the full moon crossing the range
Ridin' the storm out
Ridin' the storm out.

My lady's beside me, she's there to guide me.
She says that alone we've finally found home.
The wind outside is frightening,
but it's kinder than the lightning life in the city.
It's a hard life to live but it gives back what you give
:):):)
Roll With the Changes

As soon as you are able
Woman I am willing
To make the break that we
Are on the brink of
My cup is on the table
Our love is spilling
Waiting here for you to
Take and drink of
So if you're tired of the
Same old story
Turn some pages
I'll be here when you are ready
To roll with the changes

I knew it had to happen
Felt the tables turnin'
Got me through my darkest hour
I heard the thunder clappin'
Felt the desert burnin'
Until you poured on me
Like a sweet sunshower

So if you're tired of the
Same old story
Turn some pages
I'll be here when you are ready
To roll with the changes

Roll with the changes
:):):)
In My Dreams

There was a time some time ago
When every sunrise meant a sunny day, oh a sunny day
But now when the morning light shines in
It only disturbs the dreamland where I lay, oh where I lay
I used to thank the lord when I'd wake
For life and love and the golden sky above me
But now I pray the stars will go on shinin', you see in my dreams you love me
Daybreak is a joyful time
Just listen to the songbird harmonies, oh the harmonies
But I wish the dawn would never come
I wish there was silence in the trees, oh the trees
If only I could stay asleep, at least I could pretend you're thinkin' of me
'Cause nighttime is the one time I am happy, you see in my dreams

Chorus:
We climb and climb and at the top we fly
Let the world go on below us, we are lost in time
And I don't know really what it means
All I know is that you love me, in my dreams

(Solo)

I keep hopin' one day I'll awaken, and somehow she'll be lying by my side
And as I wonder if the dawn is really breakin'
She touches me and suddenly I'm alive

chorus repeats 2x

Oho, in my dreams

Well I hope this helps :):)N

Hi Amy! Great to see ya!
Wow Brian! I knew you'd be one of the first to arrive. Now we can get our fire going. It's FREEZING out there! Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! Let the lightning strike and the thunder roll too!
Are ya enjoying REO yet Brian?(I'll have them put on that video with the Hooters). That last one, "In My Dreams", kinda reminds me of Chris Gaines "Mainstreet", where he sings about "...in my dreams, I've seen, things that only seem to happen on the silver screen...cause all they talk about is what ain't going down, on Mainstreet". Why oh why does it only have to be a dream?
Can you dig up that song "Back on the Road Again" for Amy? Did you guys bring some of your own good music? I know Brian, if he is like me, has a HUGE library of gems.

WHOA:eek::eek::eek: I missed the lyrics to Amy's song:(

Back On the Road Again

Please don't hate me mama for what I'm about to do
But the good times we've had together are just about now through
Please don't misunderstand me, I hate to see you cry
But I think that it might look better if I told you now goodbye
I'm back on the road again, it's time I leave you now
And maybe I'll see you next time, that I'm around
Until then I hope your happy baby and good times come your way
I'm back on the road again, I'm on my way

Well I've loved you since the day I met you and I'll love you till the day I die
But we both know the life I'm livin and we both know the reason why
That I've got to leave ya mama and I've got to leave today
But you know that I'll see you next time that I come through your town to play

(chorus) ooh, bye-bye baby

Hi Dale, Amy & Brian,

I am like Brian, sure don't know too much about REO but do like their music. I am really enjoying reading these lyrics, very meaningful and touching. Thanks for posting them Brian.

Amy, seeing as how this is one of your favorite R&R bands, please fill me in on them.

Dale, the words to these songs do sound like messages so similar to those delivered to us by Garth in his songs!

Mary Liz, how nice you showed up here. Come in and get warm and dry by the fire Brian built. This music is great huh? It does seem so Garth. You are right!
REO Speedwagon had some other hits;" I Can't Fight This Feeling", "Keep on Loving You", and "Take it On the Run".
Hey Brian, do you mind helping us out again with the lyrics?

And please. Share anything else that inspires ya people. This is a BYOFS(bring your own favorite songs) campout ya know!

Ok, twist my arm! :P

I have their album "The Hits" which was done in '88. That's the last album they put out, so I got that CD. I used to have all of their albums. They have so many songs, and I'm glad you like the words! That is what got me...unlike Garth...the words! The meaning. :)

REO is just one of those bands that caught my ear back in the 70's in my teens. :) Whoa mama! That's long!

REO still tours today. They were here not long ago..and just like when Garth was here...I couldn't go! It never fails...anyways...I wanna share something off of the jacket of this CD that they wrote up....it's pretty amazing.
~Quote

Traditionally, Rock 'n' roll bands do not have a lengthy life span. Those that aren't battered into early submission by tidal waves of personal acrimony, legal indifferences or ill fortune are usually swallowed whole by the shifting sands of trendy deserts or egotistical paranoia. Any act that survives for a period of even five years {GO GARTH! :)} is acclaimed as a phenomenon.-REO Speedwagon have now been on the scene for two decades(back in '88), producing 14 albums which feature some of their most vibrant exciting and memorable tunes of the era.

Great bands don't need intorductions. So consider what follows a celebration, ok? A glimpse behind the curtain and down the road. It all began in 1968, back in Champaign, IL, when Gary Richrath (lead guitar), Terry Luttrell(Lead Vocals), Alan Gratzer (Drums), Neal Doughty (Keyboards) and Gregg Philbin (bass) first put together The Rollicking Speedwagon, taking the name from the ronowned truck and fire engine-a strange choice, considering that this band have spent their entire career setting alight the musical scene! Anyway, this line-up was responsible for the 1971's 'REO Speedwagon' album, their first for the Epic label and with the remarkably adept Kevin Cronin replacing Luttrell for the 1972's 'R.E.O.-Two Record.

There's alot more, but I think this is long enough!

From "I Can't Fight This Feeling"

And even as I wander I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold dark winter's night. :)

Love y'all too!
Sometimes I think I'm a little bit crazy, :P

Yeah, Brian if ya aren't tired of posting lyrics, more would be great! If you are, I understand and that's okay. I have learned a lot already and now have to see if I can find some of their music to listen to.

Amy, can I borrow your CD? That is so true, some groups or individuals are has beens in a matter of a couple of years. Thumb push ~ you crack me up!!!! :)

Can't Fight This Feeling

I can't fight this feeling any longer
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow
What started out as friendship, has grown stronger
I only wish I had the strength to let it show
I tell myself that I can't hold out forever
I said there is no reason for my fear
Cause I feel so secure when we're together
You give my life direction
You make everything so clear

And even as I wander
I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window
On a cold, dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars, forever

Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
Come crushing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore

My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm following you, girl
Cause you take me to the places that alone I'd never find

And even as I wander I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold, dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars, forever
Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore

Keep On Loving You

You should've seen by the look in my eyes, baby
There was somethin missin
You should've known by the tone of my voice, maybe
But you didn't listen
You played dead
But you never bled
Instead you lay still in the grass
All coiled up and hissin
And though I know all about those men
Still I don't remember
Cause it was us baby, way before then
And we're still together
And I meant, every word I said
When I said that I love you I meant
That I love you forever

And I'm gonna keep on lovin you
Cause it's the only thing I wanna do
I don't wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin you

(solo)

And I meant every word I said
When I said that I love you I meant
That I love you forever

Take It On the Run

Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from another you been messin' around
They say you got a boy friend
You're out late every weekend
They're talkin' about you and it's bringin' me down
But I know the neighborhood
And talk is cheap when the story is good
And the tales grow taller on down the line
But I'm telling you, babe
That I don't think it's true, babe
And even if it is keep this in mind

{Refrain}

You take it on the run baby
If that's the way you want it baby
Then I don't want you around
I don't believe it
Not for a minute
You're under the gun so you take it on the run

You're thinking up your white lies
You're putting on your bedroom eyes
You say you're coming home but you won't say when
But I can feel it coming
If you leave tonight keep running
And you need never look back again

Okay:):):):)

Here we go:):):):)

Live Every Moment

Live every moment - love every day
'Cus before you know it your precious time slips away.
Live every moment - love every day
'Cause if you don't you might just throw your love away.
I walked for seven miles this mornin'. Footprints in the sand.
Washed away without a warning when the water hit the land.
But I will walk on 'til I can no longer stand.
I'll take you by the hand and we'll...

Live every moment - love every day
'Cus before you know it your precious time slips away.

There's water in the wind tonight.
There's a chill in the air.
It's coolin' down my skin tonight
Soakin' through your hair.
There's warmth enough within' tonight
for both of us to share.
We can take it anywhere. And we'll...

Live every moment - love every day
'Cus before you know it your precious time slips away.

Sometimes I wish we could take a trip far away.
Leave all this trouble and heartache and pain for another day.
I will search for that place but 'til I find it all I can say is...

Live every moment - and love every day
:):):)
Love Is A Rock

My love is a rock, an immovable force
Anywhere that you are, my love is right here
With any tick of the clock
Life can change it's course
But my love will not
My love is a rock
Headed out into uncharted waters
What you feel is your only guide
And each step that you take brings you closer
Just trust what you feel inside
Cause something's telling you to keep on going
Telling you that your aim is true
Could be the voice of reason, or just blind devotion
Whatever it is, it's calling out to you, singing....

Chorus

Mixed messages shoot through a wire
Tender turmoil in your voice
Change is spreading through you like a fire
Bridges are burning, you made your choice
And as you're searching for peace in your world
You may find yourself spinning around, and around, and around
While the pain you've endured
Only serves to make you surer
Of the strength you have found, and then....

Chorus

You may not be looking for love, but love may find you
You may choose to close your eyes and run
You may leave love far behind you
In your eyes I can see the future
In your heart I can always trust
In your mind I will live on forever
In your arms I will turn to dust
These are feelings like I have never known
The song of my very soul
I can no longer silently sing it
I'm gonna take it to the mountain and let it roll singing.....

My love is a rock, an immovable force
Anywhere that you are, my love is right here
With any tick of the clock
Life can change it's course
Some things are here and then gone before you know
Some things disappear without a chance to grow
But my love will not
My love is a rock
:):):)
All Heaven Broke Loose

All heaven broke loose
It hit me like a shot right out of the blue
All heaven broke loose
I was shaken by the power of love
Taken by the power of you
If I don't get to heaven
For the things that I've done
I guess it's all just history now
Too late to be the innocent one
I know that I've been led astray
Love has torn me apart
But each day is a victory now
Since you have given peace to my heart
Oh, I was a little bit crazy then
Wheels kept turnin around
And I kept losin ground
ĎTill you stopped me from fallin again

Chorus

The love that you've given me
Is a love that is true
And each time I feel like running
I come running home to you

There they are:) All three songs:):)

Let's put on something from Chris and Garth's friend Wayne Kirkpatrick. These are on his solo album "The Maple Room". I especially like "Arms of Love", makes me feel like running through a field with joy!

Arms of Love
Wayne Kirkpatrick/Billy Sprague

Angeline is sure to find that silver lining
Making wine with the feet of her soul
Can a face tell you where the hungry heart is dining
When you see me I hope you know

(Chorus)
Let me run in fields of freedom
Let me dream on the stars above
Let me live in the house of honor
And let me die in the arms of love

I donít believe Iím suited for no dress rehearsal
Should I fear all the lines I donít know?
I donít believe Iím a nominee for role reversal
I think Iíd rather make it up as I go-so
(Chorus)

Who made the sky the limit?
My mind can reach beyond it
They say "live every minute"
I donít want to wait one minute more
Iím sure to fall now and then
But donít hold me down,
Build walls around my heart and box me in

No, let me run
Let me dream
Let me live
And let me die
In the arms of love

(Chorus)

Everywhere
J.D. Martin/Wayne Kirkpatrick

Tonight I called out your name
And the thought of you
Was carried on the wind
And it echoed thruí the canyon like a train
Winding on home to me again

And I can almost touch your face
Itís almost like you never went away

(Chorus)
Everywhere I go
I can feel you all around me
In the sunrise, in the moonlight
I breathe you in like the air
Youíre everywhere

I walked thruí the forest green
Far from all the chaos and the noise
And the river she sang to me
And I could swear it sounded like your voice

There to comfort me
Soothing as a gentle breeze

(Chorus)

A Window In That Wall
Wayne Kirkpatrick

Isolation-self-imposed
I canít read you-that book is closed
But arenít you lonely
In your cell
Share a secret
I wonít tell

(Chorus)
You donít have to bear your soul
Or find your tears and lose control
You donít have to scale your fortress or let it fall
Just put a window in that wall

Do I know you?
Yes and no
Thereíre places you wonít let me go
But maybe time will help you see
That you can put your trust in me

(Chorus)
You donít have to let me in
Or throw your caution to the wind
You donít have to open up and expose it all
Just put a window in that wall
ĎCause you sit along the side
And hear the music play
But you fear the dance
But you may learn
To love it
If you give it
Half a chance

Iím not asking to be a part
Of every fragment of your guarded heart
Iím just asking for a place to begin-thatís all
Just put a window in that wall

Amy, I couldn't resist coming back to this thread after seeing REO Speedwagon live in concert for the first time last night. I thought of you often and how at PG we are all Ridin' the Storm Out together.
It was chilly and damp at the concert and now I am feverish and achy all over. But coming back here to my post of us sitting around the fire that we built, I see it is still burning, and I'm feeling at least alittle cheered up. Thank God for the refuge music gives us when it's warmth brings us together, huh? And I thank Chris Gaines for making Garth so real to me. Because when he did, I found the real friends I never had. What's cool is, I know this is only the beginning! You guys are the greatest. Love to all, DaleN
