NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An overqualified busker plans to serenade downtown workers on Wednesday.

John Mellencamp, whose hits include ``Pink Houses,'' ``Small Town'' and ``Jack and Diane,'' was to perform for free at Legislative Plaza.

All summer, the singer-songwriter has been traveling the country with two acoustic performers - a fiddle player and an accordionist. Then he picks a spot in a city, sets up and plays.

The singer has said he wants to perform on the streets for free to give something back to his fans. ``I'm just playing for the people. I don't want the newspapers writing that `He was out promoting his new record,''' he said.

The rocker has already performed similar low-tech shows in Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Cleveland. On Tuesday, he played Atlanta.

His next free acoustic performance was scheduled for lunchtime Thursday in Bloomington, Ind. Mellencamp also was scheduled to appear Sept. 17 at the Farm Aid 2000 relief concert in Washington.
