Making Plans is Ricky Van Shelton's first new album since leaving the only record company he'd ever known back in 1994. He released this album on his own and distributed it exclusively with Wal*Mart back in 1997. Now, in 1998, Vanguard is making this album available everywhere.
The album re-establishes Shelton as one of the most distinctive voices in country music. Songs like "She Needs Me," "I Wish You Were More Like Your Memory" and "The Best Thing Goin'", show him singing the kind of consummate, vintage country that has garnered him 12 Number One singles, five Platinum albums and three more Gold ones. In addition to these future Shelton classics, making plans includes choice cuts from Merle Haggard ("When The Feeling Goes Away"), Mel Street ("Borrowed Angel") and Johnny Russell ("Making Plans").
Making Plans, with its simple, direct songs and powerful vocals, returns Ricky Van Shelton to those award-winning ways. Better yet, it takes him to a new place, a world of creative self-reliance where he doesn't have to answer to anyone but himself--and his fans.
"I wanted the freedom to be creative," says Shelton, "to make the kind of music that I wanted to sing and to give my fans what they wanted from me. I wanted things to be simpler. And, I wanted to be in charge."
Ricky was born in Danville, Virginia to Jenks and Eloise Shelton. He was brought up in a small community called Grit, where his parents still live today. Ronnie and Don Shelton are his brothers, and his sisters are Judy Underwood and Cacky Guill. Ricky is the youngest sibling.
The family attended St. John's Pentecostal Holiness Church, where Ricky started performing at the age of four. He was so small, he had to stand on the altar in order to be seen. The first song he remembers singing in church is "I've Got a Mansion".
As a young boy, he loved being outdoors, and would camp out in the neighborhood woods during the summer with his friends; all they needed was a blanket. They used to explore the area and hiked for miles each day -- his youth was filled with fun, innocence and daily adventures.
During his school days, Ricky's favorite classes were art and chorus. He loved to paint and draw pictures and was able to earn his spending money by selling one oil painting a week to local customers.
Besides drawing, Ricky spent a great deal of his time singing; whether he was in church, at fish fries, or in his bedroom -- singing was Ricky's life. He fell in love with country music when he was fourteen years old and discovered a style that combined gospel, rock n' roll and soul music. He has been hooked on country ever since.
After high school, he continued to perform wherever possible, accepting local bookings at lodges, clubs, and private parties. For years, he worked a regular day job, rehearsed in the evenings and performed on week-ends. His past jobs have included car salesman, house painter, plumber, appliance store manager and construction worker. He pumped gas at Jack Dawson's service station and even cut up chickens in the meat department of a local grocery store. Whenever a particular "day" job interfered with his "music", he quit and found something else.
He started dating Bettye Witt in 1979; and in December 26, 1984, the two of them moved to Nashville Tennessee, to try their luck in the music business. Bettye had accepted a position as Personnel Manager with a new company; and Ricky spent his days cleaning house, writing songs and preparing his voice to be ready for his "big break". At night, Ricky visited local night clubs, making contacts in the industry and handing out homemade demos to whomever would listen.
Bettye and Ricky were married August 4, 1986, the same year Ricky signed with CBS Records. They have built a log house outside of Nashville and raise a small herd of Beefalo cattle. Ricky has also written and published a series of children's books, called "Tales From a Duck Named Quacker".
Today, when he's not touring, Ricky spends time flying his airplane, working on his 150-acre farm, gardening, repairing his collection of classic cars and antiquing. Some of his favorite things are:
Food: Pinto Beans, Steak, Yeast Rolls, Tomatoes, Coconut Cream Pie
Clothes: Blue jeans, T-shirt, ball cap & cowboy boots
TV: Old Movies
Sports: Boxing
Hobby: Painting
Pass time: Aviation
Song: My Way
Color: Red
Tree: Evergreens (Especially Hemlock)
--------------------------------------------
Ricky's Albums:
Backroads
Bridge I Didn't Burn
Don't Overlook Salvation
Greatest Hits Plus
Loving Proof
Making Plans
Pure Country
RVS 3
Sings Christmas
Super Hits
Vol. 2-Super Hits
Wild-Eyed Dream
Soundtracks Ricky's recorded on:
Honeymoon In Vegas
Complications Ricky's been on:
Classic Christmas Super Hits
Common Ground: Country Songs Of Faith, Love &...
Country Music Classics, Volume 7
Greatest Country Hits Of The 80s, 1987
Greatest Country Hits Of The 80s, 1988
Greatest Country Hits Of The 80s, 1989
Greatest Country Hits Of The 90's, 1990 Vol 2
Greatest Country Hits Of The 90's, 1992
Greatest Country Hits Of The 90's, 1993
Heart Of Christmas
NASCAR: Runnin' Wide Open
Roy Rogers Tribute
Stars And Stripes Vol. 1
Steppin' Country
Today's Best Country (K-Tel)
Today's Biggest Country
Today's Hot Country (K-Tel)
--------------------------------------------
Ricky Van Shelton on tour:
Little Nashville Opry; Nashville, IN
Saturday, May 13, 2000 - 6:00 pm
Saturday, May 13, 2000 - 9:30 pm
Small Venue Indiana; Other, IN
Saturday, September 30, 2000 - 6:00 pm
Saturday, September 30, 2000 - 9:00 pm
---------------------------------------------
Ricky On The Web:
Ricky Van Shelton has no official homepage, and no fan pages on the web.
---------------------------------------------
So there ya have it :)
That's this weeks "Artist Of The Week" :)
BTW.. get "Backroads" from Ricky.
