OK, I saw it and thought it was pretty lame. It is worth watching though. I'll probably watch the rerun but I don't see how they can make a movie out of this. The Chris Gaines character is some artsy rock star dressed in black all the time. Something along the lines of Smashing Pumpkins meets John Mellencamp. The sex addiction wasn't funny and wasn't interesting. I dont' quite understand what the point of all this is. The music is bland, the story is boring and rather pointless. N

If you don't know what the point was, then you don't need to be here in this forum. Enough said.
I thought the special was fantastic. Garth was having a total ball with this....that came through very, very well. You could tell that he was laughing on the inside the whole time he was on camera. His sense of humor shown through like a beacon...."32 flavor-type guy"...I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that. I am so glad he did this...I will probably be smiling, thinking back on this, for a long, long time. (I won't EVEN "go there" about the shirtless picture....my heart still hasn't recovered from THAT. LOL) Thank you, Garth, for doing this. Thank you VH1 for going along with the Mockumentary. I really, truly enjoyed everything that was shown tonight. What a genius for coming up with some of the things he did, just to make Chris Gaines more real to us. I just loved it....there is nothing more I can say. Loved it, loved it, loved it. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
The Christmas album yesterday and now this....my cup runneth over.
LuvYa!
DebbieN

LadyG, what did you love about it? You thought it was funny and you enjoyed seeing him without a shirt? Is that it? Sounds like you would probably enjoy anything Garth does. I'm sure you could have written those comments before even viewing the show.
And to answer your question, regarding what I'm doing here if I don't see the point to the mockumentary, well, sorry to have to explain this to you but I'm here to find out what the point was. Saw it...
taped it....
IT ROCKED!
I am the type of CG fan that likes to get as many details about CG's life as I can. So, this was cool.
(However, if you watch a lot of the GB specials, you will notice similarities ;-) )
The Music AgentN

I agree with everything that Debbie said! The show rocked!! I really liked how they explained all about Chris's tragic life. It makes it more believable for a movie, with drama and everything. Garth was awesome, as usual! :) :) I also loved the fact I got to finally see his chest after all these years! :) :) I am also still recovering from that one!! I still have a smile on my face and have watched it 2 times already!! :) :)
As far as the movie goes I am so ready for it after tonight! I think this whole idea is so brilliant!! Afterall, we know so much about Chris and the movie is a year away! Garth is going to be great in the movie, even though it's only going to be flashbacks with him in concert footage and interviews. I wished it was more about Chris and Garth actually got to act in the movie!! :( I didn't find anything wrong with the show!
DonnaN

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT ...
I think it was so cool, I loved how cool Garth was in the interview. He played Chris so well. He really is a great actor. I was almost in tear when he was talking about his friends death. I think they might have over done how much Chris was addicted to sex but hey I liked all Garth comments..heheh
Anyway it was really awesome in my opinion and everything seemed so real !! I WANT THE MOVIE NOW !! Okay I know we have awhile but that special really made me want to see more.
Now I have a question near the end they said "The Lamb," is his next CD if that is so and he dies before the movie does the CD ever get finished UMMMM ??????????
JenN

Well, I saw and taped the show. It was great :) But why was it great?
Here is why:
1)I now have a better understanding of who this mysterious Chris Gaines is.
2)Garth and his people did a good job in making this mocumentary, though it was totally untrue.
3)The footages and photos were cool.
I think the whole show was portraying a typical rock artist's life. But again, without all the obstacles in Chris' life, they wouldn't be able to make a great movie out of it. If you think about "burning down of the house", the scene could be quite dramatic on big screen :)
I guess everyone has his or her piont of view, and hopefully people would like it more after awhile.
Anyway, the music is AWESOME :D
TommyN
Can't wait to see it. A fellow PGer is taping it for me as VH1 doesn't seem to be showing it over hear.
As for PIMP I think the music is brilliant.
At least we live in a land of free speech so the general feeling is that it gives an insight into who the character behind Chris Gaines. Is it that you do not understand and therefore you feel the need to 'knock' it. I cannot wait to get my hands on the tape for the music and info. N

Yes, DUTCHGBfan...SHIRTLESS!!!!!! That was the first time I've ever watched a GB special and wanted it to hurry up and be over so I could go back and re-wind it!!!!! Silly, huh?
And yes, Pimp, I would love ANYTHING Garth does....I'm not ashamed of it. Far from it, I'm proud of him and his acomplishments...I'm proud that I associate myself with someone with his talent and commitment to his music. I'm proud of the fact that I have met the man face-to-face and know first hand the love and respect he has for his fans. Every fan in PG knows what the Mockumentary is about...we're going along for the ride and loving every minute of it. Garth HIMSELF called it a "mockumentary"....it's a tongue-in-cheek look at a FICTIONAL character in a movie, therefore unable to be called a "documentary".
The reason, Pimp, that we love it so much, is the fact that Garth himself is having so much to do with the making up of the history of this character. Knowing that he is causing Chris to be all these different "things" and has gone through all these different "problems" is just hilarious. We KNOW the movie is going to be a drama...and we know there is going to be nothing funny at all about it.
But, the reason we find it so funny NOW, is that we all know how Garth acts in public...totally different than the way Chris acts. It is a complete 180 degree turn for Garth...
Garth is having so much fun creating this character that WE can't help but have fun with him. The MOVIE is serious business, but the CREATING of the character is FUN..and Garth knows how to have fun and share it with his fans. If you knew Garth the way we do (I'm talking about the Garth the PUBLIC knows...not the "private" Garth) then you would be enjoying this as much as we do...you couldn't NOT enjoy it. And so what if alot of the general public doesn't understand what he is trying to do (which is to get the Chris character known BEFORE the movie comes out)...sooner or later they will understand it. But, that's OUR GARTH...doing things differently than anybody else, getting slammed for it by critics, but having his true fans understand and stand by him 107%. We wouldn't have it any other way...and neither would he.
What can I say? We love him and he loves us!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
Sorry I got preachy....
LuvYa!
DebbieN

I thought it was very well done. I at one point had to remind myself that Chris Gaines is not real. I got so wrapped up in it.
I watch a lot of the vh1 Behind the Music, and I have to say, I get so bored with the same old story. Rock Star makes it big, gets caught up in the fast world of sex and drugs and then someone in the band either dies or goes into rehab. Band breaks up and reunites some years later...yadda yadda yadda.
"Behind the life of Chris Gaines" was so much more detailed and interesting. They portrayed a strong character who instead of falling to adversity, overcomes it. Personal tragedies shape him and endear him to us.
The fact that he is so extremely gorgeous doesn't hurt either. :)
I can't wait for more of Chris Gaines.
~Ann~N
