Press Release
Superstars ALAN JACKSON And JIMMY BUFFETT Team Up For Summer Duet Shipping To Radio Today

Jackson's New Single To Be Included On Hits Collection Due Out Late August Or Early September

NASHVILLE, TN - Following Alan Jackson's two recent Academy of Country Music Awards wins and the RIAA's Quadruple Platinum (4,000,000 units) certification of his Drive album, the reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year delivers his new single, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," today. Recorded with friend Jimmy Buffett at Shrimp Boat Studio in Key West last month, Jackson's sure-to-be summer anthem is one of two new tracks included on his yet-to-be-titled Arista Nashville greatest hits disc, slated for release in late August or early September.

Produced by Keith Stegall and written by Jim "Moose" Brown and Don Rollins, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" blends the humor and laid-back styles of both artists.

Very cool J...

I can't wait to hear it! If you get a sneak preview, make sure you tell us how you liked it!

I'm thinking the song is definately a drinking song! Kelli's dad always says " It's 5 o'clock somewhere"! Too funny!

>>In the video, Jackson will step though a "magical door" at the bar and onto a stage with Buffett. That concert footage will be shot Thursday in Indianapolis, production officials said. The video will be ready to air by mid-July.<<

Wow, that would be a cool show to be at! Any Indy PGers?

What's a "parrothead"? I'm as new to Jimmy Buffet as I am to country, maybe even more so, and I live in Florida! Ha! Ha! And I have a confession. I used to hate that song "Margaritaville" until I heard it done live by Kenny Chesney. I'd have to think Jimmy is gonna be thanking Alan and country music when it's all said and done.

I keep thinking about Alan's last video and that maybe he needed a change from how Nashville likes to do things. Maybe that's what the magic door represents, of bringing country to an even bigger audience. Who knows? Right now I'm listening to his When Somebody Loves You cd. Alan sure hits the spot when I need it. I haven't heard the new song with Buffet yet. Maybe when I catch this video on CMT.

I talked to a few customers yesterday. I hear Alan likes to spend alot of time staying on his boat when he's here and that the people are respectful of his privacy. That he's very friendly and takes time to talk to the locals. Most of those who own boats around here seem to know he's around alot.

I was wondering what those who have heard the song think it is about? What's some of the words?

Dale, I visited Alan Jackson's and Jimmy Buffett's site to see if anyone there had posted the lyrics, and someone had on JB's Forums. Whether these are accurate or not, I don't know, but here they are:
The sun is hot and that ole’ clock is moving slow,
and so am I.
The workday passes
like molasses
in wintertime,
But it’s July
Getting paid by the hour, and older by the minute.
My boss just pushed me over the limit.
I’d like to call him something,
I think I’ll just call it a day.

Pour me something tall and strong
Make it a Hurricane,
Before I go insane.
It’s only half past twelve but I don’t care…
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

This lunchbreak is gonna take all afternoon …
And half the night.
Tomorrow morning I know there’ll be hell to pay …
Hey, but that’s all right.
I ain’t had a day off now in over a year,
My Jamaican vacation’s gonna start right here.
If the phone’s for me, you can tell ‘em I just sailed away.

And…

Pour me something tall and strong
Make it a Hurricane
Before I go insane
It’s only half past twelve but I don’t care…
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

I could pay off my tab,
Pour myself in a cab
And be back to work before two.
At a moment like this, I can’t help but wonder:
What would Jimmy Buffett do?

Funny you should ask, Alan…I’d say,

Pour me something tall and strong…
Make it a Hurricane,
Before I go insane.
It’s only half past twelve but I don’t care…

Pour me something tall and strong…
Make it a Hurricane,
Before I go insane.
It’s only half past twelve but I don’t care…

He don’t care …
And I don’t care…

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

What time zone am I on? What country am I in?

It doesn’t matter, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

It’s always on 5 in Margaritaville, come to think of it.

Ya, I heard that.

You been there, haven’t you?

Yes, sir.

I seen your boat there.

I been to Margaritaville a few times.

All right, that’s good.

Just stumbled my way back.

OK, I just want to make sure you can keep it between the navigational beacons.

Between the buoys, I got ya.

All right. Well, it’s five o’clock, lets go somewhere.

I’m ready, crank it up.

Lets get out of here!

I’m gone.Paula

Those are some of the descriptions I learned thanks to a chance meeting of a Parrothead that checked out through my register today. She was wearing a cap that had a frontal of a fish wearing sunglasses that said "FISH HEAD MUSIC". You KNOW I had to find out and sure enough! There's a west coast Floridian named Jim Morris putting out music like Jimmy Buffet and doing shows for charity and stuff. What a strange trip it's been and I haven't even left dry land! lol! I also found two articles in today's Stuart News geared toward Alan Jackson's ties to Jimmy and Florida. Good stuff! Sounds like this video shoot Alan did in Jupiter is just the beginning of great things for us as Mr. Buffet will be around alot more too. Surely Captain Morgan is getting ready to set sail anyday now if he hasn't already. Lol!

I also found out Alan Jackson has a good thing going in Pigeon Forge. As well as Lee Greenwood and Louise Mandrell:

Alan Jackson's Showcar Cafe: The biggest breakfast crowd by far this morning overflows this round restaurant, which features "authentic home-style recipes from Alan's Mama's kitchen." This cavernous eating spot, a temple to the yee-haw country artist from Newnan, lends new meaning to the term "cult of personality."

Jackson's pinup face is everywhere — on T-shirts, jewelry, door posters, a giant video screen playing nonstop hits, childhood snapshots in every booth, even golf balls. I almost expect to see Jackson's blond mane materializing in the biscuits and gravy like the Shroud of Turin.

Barbara Mahoney from Surgoinsville, Tenn., making her "seventh or eighth" trip to Pigeon Forge this year, says she's here today "to see the man with the perfect body. Ooooh, I love them legs!"

Holy cow. Turns out Jackson is indeed due to make his first-ever appearance at the restaurant. By the time he launches into a 20-minute concert in the parking lot, fans and traffic virtually shut down the Parkway.

Grade: B+. (but only if you're a Jackson fan)

I wonder if AJ's restaurant is still there? We drove by it years ago when we went there. Lee Greenwood left his theatre in 2001, having no idea the resurgence in popularity he was about to come into! Louise Mandrell used to do car dealer commercials talking about driving back and forth to Pigeon Forge each week, I think her theatre is still open. Pigeon Forge has great shopping!

Vanessa, I noticed at his website that Jim Morris also plays alot of dates at Margaritaville. I've emailed him, and his people tell me he would be thrilled to play an East Coast date. I'm gonna have them mail the offered press package with cd's to our fair office.

Also, I caught this at the Reba link on the PG main forum.

Alan and Jimmy Beat out Reba and Brooks & Dunn for Record
(Neil Haislop, countrystars.com)
06/23/2003
The new Alan Jackson-Jimmy Buffett tune, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," set a record for the highest debut of a duet on Billboard's country singles chart( billboard.com) set in 1998. The song bowed at No. 31, one notch above the previous record-holder, the Reba McEntire-Brooks & Dunn song "If You See Him, If You See Her."

I wonder how filming went yesterday for the rest of the video?

I heard the video is out. Has anyone caught it yet? Was the Jupiter lighthouse featured? I keep hearing story after story from customers that they've seen or met Alan while out shopping or dining. My musician friend Chaz says a guy at work was only recently seated at a restaurant right next to Alan and his family. The family must be spending as much time down here as possible while the girls are out of school.

I don't listen to radio but I do get WIRK's emails and it says JD & the Wake-up Crew will be talking to Jimmy Buffet Monday. I may not get to catch that but I did find a snapper recipe at WIRK from Alan's boat captain. :)

I don't know how I get so lucky but I met a young lady today buying new Rascal Flatts and Toby Keith cds(not sure on the second). It turns out she's related to this guy who owns Castaways. He and Alan are very good friends she said and she has met Alan too. I gave her my card from the Martin Co. And did you see the current issue of Country Weekly with Alan gracing the cover?
HIDDEN WORLD
The songs he writes and sings reveal a lot about Alan Jackson.
http://www.countryweekly.com/stories/feature.cfm?instanceid=58994

I couldn't find the TALE OF THE TUNES section online there but he does mention Florida as having effect on his song writing going back to 1999's "Little Man":
In 1998, Alan took a long drive from his home in Georgia to clear his head. One thing he came back with was this hit, which mourns the loss of small businesses to large corporations. "I made a trip down the coast to South Florida, and went through a lot of small towns off the interstate," he remembers. (That be us!) "I'd had some of those thoughts during the years about being from a small town and watching the court squares get hammered by the mini-malls and everything moving in, so it has always been on my mind."

I know our county commissioners have tried for years to stop a Wal-Mart Supercenter from moving in where I am but it looks like it's finally going to happen next year. And with the attention Alan has brought to Jupiter and Castaway's Marina, the place is thriving more than ever. But I think Alan has discovered what makes Florida so special is the "little people" who live and work here. I also caught the premier of Toby Keith's new video about how he "likes this bar", and of course, there's lots of friends in low places in that one too! And now, the Rock' In Horse is gonna have a country music video filmed soon too and I hope to be a part of it. Must be the new trend ever since Alan's prior video that showed Nashville's ideas of country music may have gone alittle too stale for the likes of him. Then, he showed up down here. I ain't complaining! What's funny about that video with the Alan Jackson lookalikes is, my mom says there is a guy who lives near her (Ocala/Gainesville area), who everybody mistakes for Alan and the guy actually signs autographs using Alan's name. I told her I'd know Alan's smiling eyes anywhere. That guy could never fool me. With or without a guitar in his hands. :)

For 3 cool Jupiter lighthouse online postcards to send:
http://web.tcpalm.com/postcard/

Oh! One more thing! I'm reading Jimmy Buffett's book A Pirate Looks at Fifty in order to finally make myself more at home in "Margaritaville" and discover what it is Alan and Jimmy seek down here. The first thing Jimmy did as soon as he got his first big advance check was buy a boat.
To me it was freedom. The rock 'n' roll business is not known for it's compassion or job security, and I reasoned that a boat was a home that was paid for. A home that could accompany me anywhere in the world that I chose to go. It did not belong to a bank or a partner. It was mine to do with what I wanted and go where I pleased...When you spend alot of time on the water, you lose touch with what's happening on the land. Record deals, family problems, career decisions, all that stuff is somehow washed from your mind and you just think about the fish, the wind, the water depth, the current, the tide, the voyage.

I'll stop there with Jimmy's thoughts on his own lines of latitude and longitude, as it reminds me of how we all sail our vessels until the river runs dry. And I don't think Florida has exclusive rights to that! :)

More reflections from A Pirate Looks at Fifty.

When I ran away from Nashville to Key West, I was traveling light. I took only my guitar, a duffle bag full of clothes, and my mailbag. The tropics suited me just fine...

Maybe somebody can explain to me just why Jimmy Buffett felt like he needed to run away from Nashville? Did they not embrace him or he them, as Alan has, in what seems to be the best of both worlds?

Why his guitar is necessary "baggage":
Music is still the only universal language, and I have found myself in too many far-off places where my guitar was like a magic key, opening doors and igniting friendships in a way words never could have...More often than not, the writer's original ideas or inspirations are replaced by those of the listener, and the song takes on a whole new meaning. I have accumulated a huge collection of songs, but I don't think of them as my possessions. ...Songwriters write songs, but they really belong to the listener. I think of myself sometimes as a toymaker, who enjoys his work but takes more pleasure from the fact that his toys live in a stranger's toybox, bringing that stranger constant joy.

Well, Nashville may initially have Alan, but it's Florida that's got the magic key & door working together finally. And, I'm experiencing some of that in my own way in how I'm "working" for the music now in my own community. And the relationship we got going just seems to keep growing and developing as we go along. How cool is that??? :)

And finally, on page 77, I find this. Why am I not surprised?
My favorite generator story resulted in the composition of one of my songs, "Twelve Volt Man." My friend Michael Nesmith told me this story one day while we were working on one of the nine thousand screenplays for the movie version of "Margaritaville," which never did come to pass.

Forget Mike's generator story! I wanna read some of those scripts someday! Also, Jimmy just had a 2cd hits released. I think it's time I take a much needed vacation and finally check out this land and sea of Margaritaville and transform into a Parrothead for awhile and see how I like it. And it just so happens I "set sail" Saturday! Bon voyage! :)

fuzzwuzz
08-28-2003, 10:23 PM
I did it! I kicked off my week's vacation tonight with Jimmy Buffett's Meet Me in Margaritaville: the Ultimate Collection, in which Jimmy answers the question, "Where is Margaritaville?" with:

IT'S IN THE TROPICS somewhere between the Port of Indecision and Southwest of Disorder, but no parallels of latitude or longitude mark the spot exactly. You don't have to be a navigator to get there. Palm trees provide the camouflage. Ocean breezes bring the seaplanes and sailboats, tourists and travelers. Passports are not required. Island music rules. No waiting lines for anything. There is a beach and a thatched roof bar perched on the edge of the turquoise sea where you can always fins a barstool. There are lots of lies and loads of stories.
Where is Margaritaville? Follow this album into your player and you'll be transported there.

I'm all ready to sail with Captain Morgan after just the first cd! And I hope to finally stop by Castaways this week while I'm at it too. Maybe get me a t-shirt and leave a postcard for Alan Jackson. Hey, I may never get to Nashville but who says it can't come to me? ;)

Jimmy Buffett's fans are dreamers who listen, then act. Take one lesson from all of this: Embrace Life so that you too can capitalize the word. ~Tom Corcoran~

..the winds of fate blew me away from the ocean, and I became a Nashville cat.

Did you know Bill Williams hired Jimmy as assistant Southern editor of Billboard within 24 hours of his arrival to Music Row, and that he was the first one to break the story on the Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs breakup? When Jimmy made his first record with Andy William's Barnaby Records, he had to quit his job at Billboard because of "conflict of interest." Down to Earth started off with a bang with good reviews, but in El Paso, it bombed. Jimmy decided from then on he was gonna handle his own shows and business end of things.

Jerry Jeff [Walker] had given me an open invitation to come and visit him in Miami...I was desperate to escape Nashville...I had only been in Tennessee for two years, but during that time not a day went by when I didn't miss the ocean. The whole purpose of going there in the first place was to generate a career that would allow me to live where I wanted, which was on an island. My gills had dried up before I was able to convince the powers that be that I was their boy. The career part had not happened, but fate had brought me back to where I belonged...the years in Nashville had been spent trying to fit into a system and culture that was foreign to me...I came from the bayous of the Gulf Coast...Nashville had been a necessary detour on my songline. In Miami, that Feb., I was back where I belonged. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew it was the right spot to leave from.

Those were just snippets of Jimmy's thoughts on his time in Nashville, from pages 213-220. I'll tell you what though. For someone who didn't fit in in Nashville, it seems the country artists have embraced Jimmy very much as evidenced at live shows where they perform his songs quite often. Kenny Chesney. Tim McGraw. I know there is more...

I'll have pics up tomorrow of Castaways. They came out great! Just know the place seems to be making alot of waves in the local news, but mostly good ones as the area goes through changes that many hopes doesn't adversely affect the establishments future. As I read these articles, I can't help but think how "Little Man" was inspired by places like Castaways who are living that fight to stay in existance. I just find it so interesting and inspiring, not just because of Alan. The people here are great as he found out for himself. But it does seem he took one step further in making it happen for "the little man" in this case. And I'm much obliged. Thanks Alan! Don't forget to pick up the postcard I dropped ya while I was there visiting! Thanks for taking such good care of the music AND the little people. :)

Glad you finally discovered Buffet Dale! I've been a parrothead for years as well!

I just found this trhead and wanted to comment on a few things.

I saw Jimmy Buffet in Nashville a few months ago and AJ joined him on stage for Margaritaville. Kenny Chesney came out for the song Volcano at the end.

Jimmy had to "run away from Nashville" because he definitely wasn't embraced since he didn't fit the country mold (we're talking about in the early 70s here). His first hit single was called Come Monday and was released as a country single. Jimmy has a lot of country influences, but he is definitely his own genre of music.

Also, Parrotheads are a bit more intense than Garthnutts. Being a parrothead usually includes more than just being a fan - there's usually fins, feathers, and lots of margaritas involved! :D

I still haven't seen the 5 o'clock somewhere video, but sounds like I need to.

You sure do PJ! My friend Krista who took the Castaways adventure with me and is besides herself wondering how I could fall head-over-heels for Jimmy Buffett when she had to practically drag me not to long ago to Margaritaville at Universal Stdios while we were there to see the Moody Blues at the Hard Rock Live. I just didn't get the fascination or the song. But I guess I do now! And Krista reminded me that Darryl Worley also sang the song last Feb. at the Martin Country Fair. How could I forget? Darryl was awesome! And I remember reading in Jimmy's bio that he opened for the Eagles Hotel California tour in 1977. (I'll share the real meaning of that album's theme later that I just read in Blender magazine.) Maybe Nashville didn't embrace Jimmy Buffett, but the country artists sure did and I have to think it is THEY who turned me into a Parrothead. And, it didn't hurt that I live kinda near Castaways in Jupiter and that I grew up on the Jersey shore and still remember those summer days there as the best in my life. I miss it there, but this week's vacation right here in my own backyard has taken me further than I ever dreamed! What fun!

Yes they took that feature off. They don't want people to be able to compare the number of rock videos they play to the actual country ones. :rolleyes:

I believe when Jimmy was in Nashville he was working for one of the magazines... was it Billboard? He got that hard lesson that you don't come to town and become a star, you have to get a real job. ;)

Joyce, he did have a real job. Billboard hired him as soon as he got into town. Later, it was Billboard, according to Jimmy, that thought he should give it up and just do his music. They said he couldn't do both.

ASK BLENDER

What is the Eagle's legendary hit "Hotel California" about?

It's not about a hotel in in Todos Santos, Mexico, or a mental hospital in Ventura County. And it's definitely not a tribute to Anton La Vey's Church of Satan (as many '70s stoners decided). Nor is it simply about a brothel or coke addiction, either.
The hotel was actually a metaphor for the excess and apathy that Don Henley saw not just in Los Angeles but in mid-'70s Americ, where "the magic seems to be missing" but people carried on getting wasted anyway. "I was simply using California as a microcosm for the rest of America and for the self-indulgence of our entire culture," Henley said.
What about that weird, much-debated line about ""the warm smell of colitas"? "It's supposedly Spanish for bud," Henley said. "I was looking for a way to describe the smell of lit weed." We TOLD you it was about pot, dude...

I guess we almost did waste away to nothing in the seventies??!! Maybe that explains alot of the trash printed in Blender magazine unfit to read? But just think, I only just got caught up to Margaritaville!! I'm the one in trouble dude! I hate to think! :)

ALAN JACKSON AND JIMMY BUFFETT'S "IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE" TOPS THE COUNTRY AIRPLAY CHARTS FOR A SEVENTH WEEK

JACKSON'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME II AND SOME OTHER STUFF CONTINUES AT #1 FOR A 3rd WEEK ON BILLBOARD'S COUNTRY ALBUM SALES CHART

Jackson Joined CMT in Back-to-Back Appearances on Saturday's Grand Ole Opry Live and Season Premiere of Most Wanted Live

Nashville, TN - Superstar Alan Jackson continues to set the tone for summertime radio as his CMA-nominated vocal event with Jimmy Buffett, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," holds the #1 position on both Billboard and R&R's country airplay charts for the seventh consecutive week. The history-making single, which ranks as the first country radio-only track to hit the Top 20 of Billboard's Hot 100 pop airplay chart, also sets a personal record for Jackson as his longest-running chart-topper, surpassing the five-week #1 success of "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)."

Jackson is also three for three as his latest Arista Nashville disc, Greatest Hits Volume II and Some Other Stuff, continues to top Billboard's Top Country Albums sales chart for a third week. Debuting at #1 on both the pop and country album charts with the highest weekly sales total of any country release in 2003, the disc follows the mammoth success of Jackson's previous collection, the quadruple-platinum certified Drive.

Capitol recording artist Dierks Bentley is at the top of both the Billboard and R&R country charts this week with his first single, "What Was I Thinkin.'"

"It's probably too early to be celebrating my first #1 with a cold beer, but then again, it's five o'clock somewhere," Bentley said while preparing for a concert in Seattle, Washington. "No matter how well a song is received on the road, it takes a lot of hard work and luck to get it to number one. I'm very honored and proud of my team at Capitol Records and Sony/ATV."

I was curious about Alan's High Milage cd because it seems different than his other stuff. And now I see why. It was his dark period finding himself again in his marriage. And Florida seems to have been like a healing to him from even way back. There's also tons of stuff on Alan's relationship with Denise I left out. I'm glad that stuck it out!

On top of the country Jackson reconciles career, family
Date: 09-01-1998; Publication: USA Today; Author: Brian Mansfield

Alan Jackson's a happy man these days. It has nothing to do with his 30,000-square-foot mansion, the 25 million records he's sold, or even his album High Mileage, out today, and its top 10 country single, I'll Go On Loving You.
Jackson is happy because he got his family back.

If Jackson's fans want a sense of what his life was like during the separation, he'd rather they listen to High Mileage. ''I'm sure they' ll read a lot into this album, and there is a lot of heart and soul in it.''

I'll Go On Loving You, the sensual first single, already has fans talking. Written by Nashville singer/songwriter Kieran Kane, the song, with intimately spoken lyrics like ''I'm reminded that what I feel for you will remain strong and true long after the pleasures of the flesh,'' is perceived as Jackson's message of recommitment to his wife.

While the song has become just that for Jackson, he recorded it (and much of the rest of the album) during his separation. The effect on Jackson is apparent on Gone Crazy, in which a man tries to escape his loneliness after his wife leaves him.

''My wife loves it,'' Jackson says of the ballad. ''It's her favorite song on the album.''

''There was a depth and a darkness on this record that had never been there before,'' says Stegall, who has worked on all of Jackson's previous albums. ''When something's going on like that in your life, it goes with you everywhere. He was in a lot of pain, a lot of struggle, which made it more difficult to make the record. He probably got into the songs more, got lost in the lyrics, which he'd never done before.' '

Jackson says the separation even influenced Little Man, which is shaping up to be an album highlight. The song laments the demise of small- town squares and the merchants who worked there when they were the centers of thriving communities. It has nothing to do with Jackson and his wife, but he wrote it after an impulsive drive from Tennessee to Florida.

''When we were going through all that, I was about to go crazy one day,'' he says. ''I got in my car and drove. I hadn't driven anywhere, other than up to the lake or around town, in probably five or six years. I'm always riding the bus or flying.''

Jackson wound up in south Florida, where he vacationed as a teen growing up in Georgia. On the way back, he bypassed the interstate, traveling through dozens of small towns.

''They all had little court squares, and they're just dying around there,'' he says. ''Some of them are doing all right, but a lot are {lbra}dying{rbra} because all the big chains have come in.

''It was like every small town was reminding me of home. It all looked so run-down and worn-out: All the gas stations closed up. That's why I wrote that song.''

The other has friends that were in Alan's video and hung out with him alot before the shoot. I asked him if the bartenders in the video doing the fancy glass tricks worked there too. He said no, they were brought in, except for the woman. And that all of the patrons were real too.

$1,000 cheeseburger? Well, you might get more

He's not busting the polls like Howard Dean and he doesn't have a four-star résumé like Wesley Clark, but Florida Sen. and Democratic presidential hopeful Bob Graham has something the other presidential aspirants don't -- Jimmy Buffett.

The tropical troubadour has done it before -- for Gov. Lawton Chiles, for Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay and Bill McBride and for lesser politicians -- so why not do a fund-raising concert for Graham? It's not one of those peanut-butter-and-jelly shows either. No sir. This ditty's a beach party at The Breakers on Nov. 23. Tickets are a lofty $1,000 (limit two per person; that's the legal limit, because their purchase is considered a donation to the Graham campaign).

The Breakers is dealing strictly with its client -- Buffett. "He's a good customer and he has reserved the beach," resort publicist Margie Adelsperger said.

Wonder how many Republicans will jump at the chance to see Buffett in such an intimate setting. He pulled off a similar benefit at The Breakers in April 2002 to raise money for the Academy of the Palm Beaches, where his youngest children were then enrolled. To order, call (305) 328-5016.

I spent part of my day up catching up with things I had taped of Alan Jackson on CMT. Was not too happy and made a mistake, cutting almost ALL of Alan's part of the Opry Live show. What did I miss after Chattahoochie? Oh well! I did catch what Alan told Katie Cook about hanging out together with George Strait and Jimmy Buffett in the Bahamas. George does like his fishing down here. :)

And I watched and listened again with interest how Alan just seems to connect to The Little Man with his music. And he connects to me as a female too. I can't believe I once just couldn't see it. Maybe it's that I now see unfolding in him what everybody saw unfolding in Garth that I had missed. Alan makes me feel that even without Garth the music is in the best hands imagineable.

Oh! And while my son and I were closely watching the clock for his pizza in the oven to be done, Alan announced his song "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" on my video of his recent CMT MWL appearance. But guess what time the clock said? You guessed it! Exactly 5:00! Very strange! But lately, nothing surprises me anymore. :)

Another celebrity sighting involved country-western star Alan Jackson at Castaways Marina during the summer. Jackson, who lives part time in Jupiter Island, sailed his "little" boat "Hull Billy," down the Intracoastal and anchored at the controversial waterside bar and bait shop.

Why? To take part in filming a music video for "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," the hit song he performed with his neighbor from Palm Beach County, one James Buffett.

Although Buffett was nowhere to be seen on the scene, Jackson's presence was carefully stage-managed by a protective production crew that choreographed his every move ... as well as the movements of members of the public who wandered onto the "set."

Jackson's "big" boat, "Neon Rainbow," has been spotted anchored at the marina just outside Jupiter Inlet Colony, south of the Beach Road drawbridge.

And speaking of Mr. Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett was named to the Artistic Advisory Board of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. Buffett, who lives in Palm Beach, joins such show biz luminaries as opera star Roberta Peters, director Tommy Tune and actress Dina Merrill on the 13-member group that will offer collective wisdom and guidance in the operation of the theater, scheduled to open at the end of February.

Rumors abound that Buffett will contribute more than just advice to the early days of the theater's rebirth, and we're not talking about lime juice and tequila. Officials at the Maltz are close-mouthed about that.

Television's animal adventurer Jack Hanna became one of the most recent celebrities to adopt Jupiter as at least a part-time home in mid-year. His program, "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures," has introduced millions of Americans not only to some strange critters, but to Hanna's ingrained love of animals ... and his dry sense of humor, too.

Hanna, who moved here because of his love of the ocean and Jupiter's dog-friendly beaches, has worked several times with the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, the animal rehab organization on Jupiter Park Drive, and Busch's executive director David Hitzig.

He was spotted there in November spending time with visiting family members, and talking with other visitors to Busch who recognized the well-known animal guy ... even without a ferret on his shoulder.

Another of the area's famous residents, Broadway Joe Namath, whose home is in Tequesta, embarrassed himself during a half-time TV interview during the Dec. 20 Colts-Jets game. Being interviewed by ESPN's Suzy Kolber, Namath haltingly told the sidelines broadcaster, "I want to kiss you," before the interview was quickly terminated.

Known around the neighborhood as a genuinely nice and down-to-earth guy, Namath apologized shortly thereafter. "I was full of Christmas cheer, certainly too much," he confessed. "I feel awful about what happened."

Even though it's a well-known fact that BMI and ASCAP do not pay identical royalties, it is thought that eventually, over time, the royalties paid on a particular song will come close. This article has been circulating and someone is currently trying to confirm whether or not the facts are correctly stated:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am a writer on "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" which spent eight weeks at #1 last year. To make a long story short, here is the history of the royalty payments on that song:
January 2004-ASCAP $6K/BMI $20K (ASCAP matched)
April 2004-ASCAP $119K/BMI $135K (ASCAP matched)
July 2004 ASCAP total $99K/BMI $60K (drum roll please)
BMI REFUSED TO MATCH!!!!!!! I have received some vague and nonspecific mouthings about making the difference up next quarter, but I will believe that when I can spend it. In the meantime my cowriter has $39K that I don't have, and may never have, for the same song, same writer's share, no publishing, etc.
Its extremely difficult to get to the point in this business where a writer can have a hit, still less one like this, and it is hard to discribe the feeling when you are SCREWED out of just compensation for your work. The best weapon of the PRO's is secrecy, so I feel it is my duty to let as many people in our business as possible know about this. Do I think ASCAP is any better? No I don't. There is a long and ugly history of underpayments on their part as well.
We as writers and publishers need two things to happen. First, we need a scale of pay for performances that is understandable and accountable, so that we can look at spins reported on the charts and know how much our pay will be. Second, we need the right to be members of any or all PRO's at the same time, JUST LIKE OUR PUBLISHERS.
We should be able to designate which group will administer our performances on a song by song basis, and if the PRO's want us to be exclusive, they can pay us a signing bonus.
Please let as many people as possible know about this, those of you with contacts in Congress please let them know as well. Advice is appreciated(anything except "shut up Bo and take the Cadillac and be grateful").
Silence will only let them do this to all of us.
Thank you,
Don Rollins
