Could someone who is 'in the know' please tell me why Steve is no longer with Capitol? What happened? I saw his new CD in the store today, but there was also a Capitol CD, a 'hits' CD, dated 2003, as well. I know I haven't exactly 'kept up' with Steve for a while now, but I'm confused, please enlighten me?! Thanks!!!

So, nobody 'in the know?'
or just nobody wantin' to share? :-"
Just curious to know if Capitol dumped Steve or if Steve left under amicable conditions. Anyone know?

I honestly don't know. But I bet with the way country music is sounding today, he doesn't fit in and they released him. I just love his music, but he's not a "pop country" singer, to me he's too country to fit into today's standards of country.

I love his music, too! :D Unfortunately, you are probably right, that's what I'm kind of assuming at this point, that Capitol let him go. I was just hoping that someone might actually know something about what happened. After having some pretty decent hits like 'Holes...', 'Two Teardrops', and 'I'm Already Taken'(?), it's hard to believe that he wasn't worth keeping at the label! It almost seems like once Garth left, Steve was gone, and I can't help but wonder if it was Garth's 'protection' that kept him there, and now that Garth doesn't carry any weight with Capitol anymore, since he's not their 'cash cow' anymore, they dumped Steve as soon as they could. If this is not what happened, it would be good to know that. I hope that they 'parted ways' with no hard feelings.
Steve has often been referred to as that ol' 'Triple Threat' thing, not only having a great voice, but also being a terrific songwriter and an awesome guitarist. I also greatly admire him for his loyalty and dedication to the Opry. I hate to see him end up being one of those guys who is respected and admired in Nashville and by hard-core country fans, but not really 'known' by those who only follow the likes of Tim McGraw and Toby Keith, the 'top dogs'. It's just kinda sad, if that happens. Our radio station isn't playing anything off of Steve's new album, I didn't even know that he had a new album!! I just happened to see it when I was in Wal-Mart a couple of days ago.
They had Steve 'in studio' yesterday afternoon, my family and I were blessed to be able to be there for it. We had a great time, there were just a handful of people, other than the station people, Steve, and us, for over an hour. I was having such a good time, it didn't even dawn on me, until later in the day, that NOTHING was said about the new album, the new singles, NOTHING!!! I mean, you know that's why he was there, doing a radio tour, to promote his new stuff, but the whole hour on the air was just like one big reminiscing session, with Steve doing his old hits and talking about Garth and talking about stuff he's written for other people. When I realized that, later on, I felt REALLY BAD for Steve, and I wish I had said something. But, hey, that's not MY job, what the heck were the radio people thinking??? Was his new stuff ignored, on purpose, because they haven't been supporting it? I just don't get what happened. I think I'm gonna have to write an e-mail or make a phone call and see if someone can explain it to me. Sorry, I know I'm kinda rambling now, it's just the more I think about it, the more I think about it, ya' know? ;) Guess that's enough of that for now! :-"

Steve asked to be released from his Capitol contract...after Quigley left. He (Steve) started his own label (Selectone records)
He said he left because he had enough of the 'BUSINESS' end & wanted to do his own thing - his own way. Go Steve!:)
[i]until later in the day, that NOTHING was said about the new album, the new singles, NOTHING!!! I mean, you know that's why he was there, doing a radio tour, to promote his new stuff, but the whole hour on the air was just like one big reminiscing session,[/B]
THAT I dont understand.. his "Peoples" lack of info & PR.
Its frustrating to be a Wariner fan.. you have to play detective to.
Which @ times can be fun.. you discover all sorts of things like the Secret 1977 album.. but on the other hand.. it only hurts them when they realize most people move on.. w/no info.. out of sight outta mind.. NEXT.
The new album had some really great songs on it that will never see the light of day on radio.
Not sure what the deal was w/the New Capitol Hits CD.. I guess they wanted to piggy back/cash in while his name was out there??
& the packaging SUCKED. (JMHO)
It will be interesting to see what happens next for Steve....

scout ~ thanks, dude! (um... assuming you are a 'dude.' ;) If you're a 'dudette', please forgive...)
I just knew that there had to be SOMEBODY around here who knew something about this! I'm sooo glad to hear that Steve left on his own terms, that does make me feel a LOT better about the whole situation. I knew that he had his own studio now, but I didn't realize that Selectone is his label, as well. Very cool.
We did have a great time with him yesterday! I mean, I just KNEW, before meeting him, that he was a great guy and that we would love him, so there was no big surprise there, but he was so cool. He did magic tricks for Dakota (my little one), who I am ABSOLUTELY SURE will never forget that! 'Mommy, he blew that quarter out of his NOSE!!!' *sigh*
I'm trying NOT to feel guilty about having so much fun and just enjoying listening to him sing all my favorites, standing close enough to almost touch him the whole time. But, everytime I stop to think about him being there for a purpose, and never being given the opportunity to talk about it, my heart just sinks for him. He is TOO nice! I know from all of the interviews I've ever watched or listened to, when someone is promoting a project, that the 'interviewER' is the one who kicks it off with 'so, you've got a new album out...', which opens the door for them to talk about it, right? He never was given the open door, and he didn't do any 'shameless self-promotion' by bringing it up. He was just very gracious and went right along with whatever the DJ chose to ask him about, did all those songs, gave an hour or more of himself, and got NO promotion for the album, no mention of any of the songs. The only thing I can think of that will serve as some possible benefit for him is the fact that they did play the new Kenny Rogers song that Steve wrote. So, maybe a few royalty dollars will come from the time spent in Fresno, California.
Well, I guess I've ranted about that enough, and there's nothing I can do about it now. Although I do really want to talk to the DJ who was there and see if maybe I can find out if there was a reason behind not 'going there', possibly encourage him to spend some time playing Steve's stuff and talking about the new album. Like my input will make much difference. But I'll try.
Again... thank you very much for answering some of my questions, 'tis appreciated!!! :)

No Problem DeeDee :)
Very cool that you got to be there & that he's still doing Magic.
Did he play anything live or was it just an interview type thingy?
What was the fashion report??
Let me guess.. jeans & black shirt with ..
A. brown stripe
or
B. Black shirt (Steal CD cover).

Oh, he did PLENTY of stuff live, it was great! He did 'Holes...', 'Two Teardrops', and 'I'm Already Taken.' He did a medley of stuff he's written for other artists, including 'Longneck Bottle', 'Where the Blacktop Ends', and 'Been There'(?). I'm trying to remember if there was anything else, but I can't. He sounded sooo good!! It was REALLY a treat to be able to be there! I told him, shortly before we left, in fact just as our arms were going around each other's waist, for a picture, that he makes a great in-studio guest, 'cuz he has such a great voice and sounds so good acoustic. He was very humble about my comment, and even made some noise to the effect of 'oh, I don't know...', I was like 'you do!' :)
Okay, fashion report it is. Blue jeans, yes, some kind of black shirt, no! Sorry, wrong guess. It was a blue shirt, kind of a muted blue, not real dark, not real light, in the middle, a little darker than what I would call 'country blue', if that makes sense. I don't know what to call it! Anyway, short sleeves, a thin, smooth material, kinda silky. My husband says it was a polo-style shirt, but I kinda think it had buttons all the way down, not sure. Maybe a little texture to it, but no obvious print or design on it. It felt nice, if that helps! ;) I felt a little weird, when we did the picture, 'cuz the material was so thin, I could really 'feel' his waist when I put my hand there, you know, the tone of it. It made me stay pretty 'loose' with my hand. I don't know, just weird. If it had been Garth, I probably would have taken much more advantage of the opportunity to enjoy what I could feel, but I just didn't feel that comfortable with Steve, if that makes sense. Okay, definitely enough of that!!

DeeDee, I can only imagine it might be for the same reasons Ty England told me he is now doing his own booking aand managing. That the percentages weren't there if he wants to get his kids through college. I also heard the label told Ty and Garth "no" on releasing "Traveling Soldier" as a single. Then look what happened. The Dixie Chicks got it out and it was too late. :(
I commend both Ty and Steve for hanging in there by going the extra mile and effort for their music. It is worth fighting for, maybe more than it is fighting the record labels.

Not everyone ('in the know, or not in the know') checks this forum every day. Sometimes it takes more than a day and a half to get the answer you're looking for, especially to a non-Garth question. Doesn't mean anyone doesn't want to share. Just means they're busy. Could be kids, could be spouses, could be work, could be they're getting lasers beamed at their eyes on the day you asked...
:waves at Scout: Hey girl!
Not sure what the deal was w/the New Capitol Hits CD.. I guess they wanted to piggy back/cash in while his name was out there??
Is the Yahoo group still up?

Joyce ~
I'm very sorry, I really didn't mean for you (or anyone else) to take that comment personally, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular, I was just in a very tongue-in-cheek mood when I wrote that. Again, I'm sorry if it sounded like it was directed at you.
I guess I was a little antsy about gettin' an answer, at first, 'cuz I had just found out, on Tuesday afternoon, that we were gonna get to see Steve on Wednesday. I was very excited, and at the same time, I was trying to catch up a little on what had been goin' on with him. The radio station hadn't been talking, at all, about him having a new album, I hadn't seen or heard anything in a long time, probably since I saw him at the Johnny Russell tribute, with his MagnaDoodle and all. I didn't want to show up on Wednesday completely clueless, and I figured that if he was doing a radio tour, something new was happening, that's why I went to Wal-Mart after I got the call, and found the two new albums there. When I checked back here, right as we were walking out the door on Wednesday, there was no info for me, which was fine 'cuz I had done some research on my own, so I knew enough to show up and have stuff to comment on when I spoke with Steve.
By the time we came back home from seeing Steve, I was still curious about the Capitol thing, but it wasn't really a big deal or anything, I wasn't in any hurry at that point. Like I said, my second post was just a silly, tongue-in-cheek thing, nothing more. I hope that you understand. I do know that there are people here at the planet, other than yourself, who keep up on stuff like this, and I kinda sorta remembered that there was at least one big Steve Wariner fan here, so I was just lookin' for info from anyone who was willing and able to 'fill me in.'
I hope that explains, a little bit better, where I was coming from. Again, I'm sorry if it sounded differently than it was intended. I did my best, with the smilies and all, to lighten it up and make it clear that I was just goofin' around. Maybe I should've used a winkie or two, it's just that I use the smile, the winkie, and the rolling eyes a lot, and I've been trying to get used to some of the new smilies, and that was one of those posts that I've done, recently, where I tried out a new one. I thought the 'whistling' smilie kinda had a similar attitude as the winkie and would let people know that I was just pokin' fun. Well, I guess that's about all I can say, in the way of explaining what happened. So, you can take it easy, it really wasn't about you, I promise.
DeeDee :)
btw... glad to hear that the surgery went well, thanks for filling us all in on what it was like, and I hope that you are enjoying the results!!! :) I loved what you said about walkin' around the house with a goofy grin all the time, it must be a pretty cool feeling to have something like your sight be sooo different. Hang on to that feeling for as long as you can, okay? :)

Dale ~
OOps, didn't mean to skip over you, sorry 'bout that! BTW... you have mail. Again. :)
I had no idea that Ty had recorded 'Travelin' Soldier! Is it on his most recent album? I have that one, but I never did listen to it a whole lot, and that was a while ago, as well. How interesting...
It is worth fighting for, maybe more than it is fighting the record labels.
Very good point. :) I totally agree.
Joyce ~
So, is there anything, about the situation between Steve and Capitol, that scout didn't mention, that you could add? If so, I'd be very interested! Thanks! :) Oh, and, btw... that Yahoo! group that you mentioned, is that a Steve Wariner fan group? Would you mind telling me what the name of it is? I would love to have a place to go to, to learn more about Steve, his career, and what's going on! His website is pretty good, but it would be nice if there were a place to 'share info' with other Wariner fans!

Stones River Band!!
It was recorded in 77'.
While he was playing bass with bob luman.
Theres only a 1000 (LP) copies of it.
Very RARE!
Steve sings lead - plays guitar & bass.
His brother David drew the album cover.
Its 70's Classic RocK sounding:)
track list-
Lost W/out Your Love (BREAD cover)
Lyin' Eyes (EAGLES cover)
I'll See You In My Dreams
Blonde Haired Woman (Steve wrote it/Bob Luman Recorded it.. Steves version sounds like Doobie Bros)
Love ReVial -Young Stevie Written (this song actually makes me LOL)
Atlanta (steve written - later got re-recorded & released by RCA as a B-side)
Orange Blossom Special.
Its not a bad album.. though for some reason it was kept a big secret & never listed on any Wariner bio/discography press.
A girl in CA took a copy to walmart a few months ago when he was doing a instore there.. he saw it & was like "OMG..put that thing away" lol.
Prob more info than you wanted FuZZ :-))))
