this has a STAIND feel to it.

CANCER

Maybe I wasn't there enough
Maybe I was the one who was really scared
They say you should die for those you love
It's written in stone how much you cared
I searched through everything we ever owned
I only now saw signs that said "beware"
No roses, cards, or pictures of any kind
But lighters and matches were scattered everywhere

Cancer's not the enemy here
Cancer's not what's getting me upset
It's that all the love that I thought you leaned on
You covered in ashes with your cigarette

Maybe you just needed room to breath
Maybe you found love in the smoke
The kind of love you couldn't get from me
Maybe love is learning not to choke
All I know is everything has changed
And all my clothes reek of the past
What once was so offensive
Reminds me of the love I wish I had

Cancer's not the enemy here
Cancer's not what's getting me upset
It's that all the love that I thought you leaned on
You covered in ashes with your cigarette

BRIDGE:
Now what you loved, what you always craved
I watched you put it down in dirty trays
After treating what you love like that
Where you are right now's where you should stay

Cancer's not the enemy here
Cancer's not what's getting me upset
It's that all the love that I thought you leaned on
You covered in ashes with your cigarette

Scott, I really liked that.. are you trying to become a songwriter?

hey

thanks. actually, for awhile i was. until someone asked me "what do you want to be? a songwriter or an artist." i asked him to explain, and he said "a SONGWRITER writes and writes and rewrites specifically for someone else. that means pretty much sacrificing their original work of art to become a product that someone else can sell. an ARTIST simply writes, and puts the material out there. Some will love it, and want to buy it from the artist, and others will be inspired by the artist to go out and their own version of the artists original material."

since all my influences are artists, not songwriters, i consider myself an artist. diane warren and david foster are the most famous songwriters.....Garth, Springsteen, Dylan, Lennon, Babyface, etc.....those are all artists.

that doesnt mean artists cant go out and get good feedback to better their craft. thats what i do.

in the end,
SONGWRITERS write songs for a living
ARTISTS get paid to live their life, and write about it.

Scott: interesting comment about songwriting vs artist, but I think the two concepts can exist in the same soul. Go for it.

Incidently, I was doing some Christmas shopping in a book store today, and as usual, I ambled over to look at the music section. I saw several books on, among other things, how to write songs, and how to sell your songs, so just in case you didn't know they were out there, you might want to check your local bookstore, or shop online for them. Barnes and Noble have their own websight, I recall. Sorry I don't remember the titles of the books, but those were the subjects. As soon as I can retire, songwriting is the next thing I'm going to tackle. I've had songs in me for years, just ready to come out!

Did you submit any to Garth for his last album? Given that he used the same 'ole songwriters (who by the way are fabulous), I can't help thinking it was a publicity stunt. Waddaya think?
