View Full Version : Baseball Players August 30th Strike Planned...

I read that a strike is planned for August 30th...
and wondered about the effect it will have on the charity 'Team Mates For Kids' that benefit greatly from 'baseball'... :(

the last strike was in 1994 and lasted 232 days...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/2002/08/16/strike_date_ap/

If this happens... I know we can't raise enough money to match what the baseball players contribute to the charity... but maybe we can do something to help out some with the charity during that time?
Got any ideas Mary Liz?

oh good point Diane! I'm just OVER these baseball players. You'd think they'd have learned from the last strike, and how badly people looked (and still look) upon the greedy players. It took Mark McGuire and the home run race to get people excited about baseball again - and still many never came back.

Fortunately hockey season is coming up, and TFK has signed up a bunch more hockey players this season.

I think your idea of doing something if they strike is a good one. Maybe an "anti-strike fund," where all pledge 7 cents a day (or whatever we can) for each day that they're on strike. Something cute but catchy. At the end we could all send in our PG Pledge sheets to Teammates!

Just a thought - let's hear other's ideas!

I love the idea of trying to help out when baseball 'strikes out' - I just don't want the length of the strike to be a good thing - i.e. - the longer they strike, the more money we raise for TFK - does this make sense???

Kerry

P.S. Like you, Joyce, I am SO OVER baseball - BRING ON THE NHL!!! (Not that they haven't had a strike before - but at least they don't go on the injured reserve with a hangnail!)

Anyone else wanting to participate ??? ~ email/PM me or post here and let me know what y'all would like to do. I agree with Joyce that 7 cents a day from each of us, as a team, during this strike could add up to anther impressive donation!

I'll keep everyone posted as to contributors and amounts!

(Diane should be #1 for coming up with this brilliant idea! Way to go Diane!)

Maddy - #99 is the great Wayne Gretzky. The NHL has actually retired the number 99 from all future teams so there will never be another 99 in the NHL.

If Mary Liz were to say that number was too high, I would have chosen #19 for Joe Sakic, my favorite current NHL player and Colorado Avalanche!

Mary Liz,

If everyone is choosing numbers...can I change mine to #29 ?
That's the date of my son Christopher's birthday...:)

I'll let you know something, Chris has planned for the past
month... along with several other teen boys that spend a
large amount of time skateboarding.
There's this team of skateboarders known as the 777's that
skateboard for Christ and charity. He read the article a
few months ago and he liked the idea of skateboarding for
charity.
We spoke about it last month and I explained that 'Team Mates
For Kids' charity is sport oriented...maybe they could get a
sponser eventually to help them out.

After all, skateboarding is becoming a big thing around here.
Chris already went to townhall with other kids to address the
community meeting with one of the boys dads as a spokesperson,
to build a skatepark with the large amount of money they have
sitting there to be used for something like a park.
They have a slab of cement to skateboard on in town... right
next to the railroad tracks... a very dangerous place.
This community meeting was on local TV and I watched as the
board refused to grant the money for a skatepark...claiming
they couldn't find any insurance company to insure it.
The kids were disappointed...but the one dad called the
newspaper... and took pics of all the kids and ran a story
about the alloted money sitting there and that he had found
an insurance company to insure the park when completed.
Now, it's up in the air and looks like it might become a
project...Next year.

So, for now the kids skate in the road here on Chris's
ramps that he builds with money he earns. The kids all pitch
money together to buy wood and other needed equipment.
I also purchased him a season pass to a professional skate
park but it's a long trip there and back. Not a place we
can run to everyday with a bunch of boys packed in the car
like sardines.

Anyway... the boys have all been talking about skateboarding
to raise money for charity. This idea is in an early
planning stage...and school starts in about two weeks.
so, maybe by early next summer we might have everything
figured out and organized for them.
I guess you have to be here to understand their excitement
about this idea... we even have a neighbor that will get
the sheet metal at cost for the ramps for 5.oo bucks a
sheet because he's a professional welder that had
a hand in welding the steel beams and triangle shaped rods
for Garth's stage that was built for the Central Park
Concert. So, he's going to help out with much needed
supplies already.

Just thought I'd share... :)

Hey, I'll get into the game! I personally think baseball players have lost the reason that baseball is played---for the love of the game. It's too bad that both management and the players are getting greedier and greedier with each passing year. Baseball used to be an event that whole families could go to and not have to spend a lot of money. Today, the players don't seem able to play outdoors anymore and have to have multi-million dollar stadiums to play in (they say in order to remain competitive) so of course the prices of tickets, food, beverages and the like has to inflate in order to help pay for the stadium. What ever happend to the good ole days?

Let me be honest with y'all.

You heard it first here:

I HATE BASEBALL!! I think it is a boring, ridiculous "sport". I once heard that some TV personality compressed a whole game down to only its exciting moments. The result? 23 minutes.

I may loathe the sport, but I love kids. I am was hoping that the strike lasted a year.

Now I am betting on it.

I guarantee the amount of one years strike to TFK.

7 cents x 365 days = $25.55

Spud,

I can understand why you hate baseball...

After all, didn't it start out with 'Taters' getting whacked with a 'stick'? You know, after George cut down the apple tree he started on the 'taters' in his mother's garden! (your ancestors!) So, that hate must run in your blood, huh? j/k

Deb... you got some great ideas there! keep 'em coming!

Dale... :) that's wonderful!

Dakota-Blue... I enjoyed reading your 'soapbox'!
I think many of the players are upset over this latest 'strike' issue. I know Garth mentioned the 'Padres' and the 'Mets' as a great bunch of guys...and he didn't embarress them by hitting a homerun during a game... that would make baseball look like an easy sport. I think Garth could've though... and I believe they knew it! :) But he cares about 'Baseball' and his charity... I bet many of those players do also.

Maybe if they strike we can make a team of our own?
Bring Garth in to pitch... we'll take turns batting and running bases! LOL
He can sing a few songs now and then, to sell tickets to fill the stadium and all the PGer's kids and Garth's girls can make pop-corn on the house!
We'll donate all the money to the charity and have the memories for a lifetime!

Garth should sing while playing the game? Well, there are some things Iīm asking myself. I would be breathless just playing the game. But he not? He beside of running and everything would have enough breath left to sing? Will he have his guitar with? A cute pic! LOL!
And what does that mean for our team? Will we win, cause the other team canīt concentrate? (Which way ever!) ;)

And wouldnīt you like Football much more? I mean itīs hard, but a good choice to "get in touch" with our boy. LOL!

Yes Maddy, the teams can strike for a year....even longer if they don't settle (come to an agreement), as I understand it. But most likely, because a strike costs everyone so much (the owners, the players, the sponsors, ect.), it will not go for that length of time.

IF this strike takes place, I will begin keeping a daily total at the pledge of 7 cents a day. Those of you who have so generously offered to double your pledge amount can just double the daily figure.

I think getting our children involved is a good idea also. :)

Is that okay to let our kids help out?
I mean the more we raise the better for 'Team Mates'...
and even if the baseball players don't strike, we can continue with a donation anyway?

I already have a 'can' walk planned for next month with a bunch of neighborhood kids and my own... a Saturday just to spend collecting cans on the side of the road and cashing them in. With 5 cans worth a quarter... it's easy to make at least 25.oo dollars in a couple of hours)

Also, tonight my son Chris, Adam and Data(also named Chris but called Data at school and beyond because he's so smart) :)
they all agreed to pledge ten (10.00) a piece to this event.
That's ( 30.00 dollars~)
and they'll ask the rest of the 'TFK skateboard team' (A name I gave them) :) within the next week or so if they want to donate.
(If this money can't be included through this event...they can mail it to Team Mates on their own... please let me know?)

The matter of whether there will be a baseball strike or not is an excellent point to bring up now. Obviously Diane & co. is committed to a donation, strike or no....I will still honor my pledge at the one year rate if there is no strike....anyone else willing to kick in a little something just for the heck of it if there is no strike? Let me know.

Bennett, the Mets pitcher, said it's difficult for low-level minor-leaguers to grasp the magnitude of the big-money contracts in the major leagues. He just wants the players and owners to avert another strike.

"The money they're making in the big leagues, it's a luxury," Bennett said. "But the owners are making money, too. They both need to give up something and find a middle ground for the good of the game.

"Baseball was good for the country after what happened on Sept. 11. And we're coming up on the one-year anniversary. For baseball to be on strike on Sept. 11 would do a lot of damage. I don't know if baseball would still be the national pastime."

Can I have #17? pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee with Garth n whip cream on top?! <weg>

I wear #17 all the time. It's our "Hometown boy" Philip Rivers' #. He had it all through high school and is now at NC State in his Junior year, continuing game by game to break record after record as a quarterback. Philip is only 20, married to his high school sweetheart and just had a baby girl...on ta-da!!!!!!!!!! July 7th! lol Philip is truly Athens' pride 'n joy. You can check him out if u want at
http://gopack.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/rivers_philip01.html
Philip is one awesome young man with a heart of gold. He almost is "scary" for lack of a better word. He's kinda like Garth, a complete package. He has that same "it" that Garth has. Kids radiate to him and well, as u can see, so do adults! LOL So, TFK if yall are listening, if you ever take this thing in the college football direction or the NFL direction (just give my homeboy 2 years! HA!) he'll be your "go to guy!" to get things rollin and the players motivated.

Anyhowwwwwwwwwww back to the business at hand! I'll gladly do the one year, strike or no strike. Dadgum ballplayers...what are they thinking?! ;)

If I can't have my beloved #17, give me the next available number that has a 7 in it. Or!? We can big time with big numbers and I'll take 1012...that was the month and date of my first Garth concert.

God knows, life ain't been the same since!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking today about other ways to raise even more money...:)

what date would be the deadline to have the money delivered to your doorstep by? What did you have in mind?

Also, I decorated a coffee can today and converted it into a 'Team Mates For Kids Charity collection can'! ;) It's sitting on my table, so I can pester everyone that visits for some change! Hey, it's already gathered around three bucks! So, it works... LOL Try it!

Another great idea Diane! You amaze me! I think I will make up a donation jar and put it up at my store! Amber...you rock, girl!

We have not really set a deadline date yet for the donations to be brought in. Of course, as soon as we can get them in, the sooner that the money can go to work helping the children! Since several people are making their donation based on the length of the baseball strike, I think we need to wait until this Friday to see whether there will be one or not. If there is no strike, anyone have any preferance as to when the donation deadline should be? I don't think we should let it drag on too long, do you?

The staff at Teammates is going to be so delighted...once more PG will show them their true hearts!

Keep those fabulous ideas coming!

Good idea Amber!

I was going to ask my daughter if I could put a can in the store where she works... it's a small deli/gas station type thing that does big business...especially lottery. Usually the guys that come in that buy lottery promise her some money if they hit it big :) LOL but maybe she can talk to them about the can instead and get some money for the charity from these flirts! I've seen cans for other charity's in the little stores around here, so it must be allowed.
I'm not sure if her boss will allow it or not...but we'll see.

Is TFK cool with us putting out collection boxes/cans?? I am sure they will love all the help they can get but i do want to make sure Garth and TFK are happy with our representation of TFk to those who donate. Whatta u think?

<3 ber

CheyenneWindRoper
08-28-2002, 03:11 PM
I am sure they will be "cool" with it Amber. As long as the donation collection items are not in a bar or XXX book store, or the such.

I will double check with them today to make sure, but I feel confidant they'll have no problem with it. After all, it will put their name out amongst the public and not only bring awareness to this wonderful charity but the needs of children all over the world.

One thing that does come to mind though is that we want to draw the attention only to the children in need....Perhaps, just using "Teammates For Kids" and not using "Garth Brooks" would be best. We would NOT in anyway want ppl to perceive that we were doing a charitable collection for Garth. If anyone who does this is asked about Teammates then feel free to explain about T4K, but let's avoid the possibility of confusing this as a donation for Garth.

I will let you know if we SHOULD NOT do this....otherwise you all proceed and let's help kids!

Huggs,
Mary Liz

countyfair_85
08-28-2002, 03:12 PM
Mary Liz... your the one that AMAZES me! :)

Well, if the strike doesn't happen... What about making the deadline around September 30th? That's one month from the day
it would officially begin. But if it does happen...I guess those that pledged a one year guarantee can send in their money by Sept. 30th while those that haven't, continue to collect per day?

Also, if you make a can or jar you should seal it so no one can open it but you... A coffee can, can be glued or sealed with with contact paper... when you want to open it, just turn it upside down and use a can opener. I think if it's allowed to have one in a store, you should pick it up each night and replace it with a new one for about three days...( unless you own the store!) ;)

Just a few ideas anyway...

Strike Averted
Baseball Negotiators Reach Deal Hours Before Deadline

N E W Y O R K, Aug. 30 — Baseball negotiators reached a last-minute deal to avoid a strike today, union negotiator Gene Orza told ESPN.

The two sides agreed to a new four-year contract, Orza said.
This is the first time the players and owners have settled their differences without a strike or a lockout. The players had said they would strike today if no agreement was reached.

The first game of the day — St. Louis at Chicago, scheduled for 3:20 p.m. ET — will go on as scheduled. The Cardinals boarded their buses and were on their way to the Chicago Cubs' Wrigley Field.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and union head Donald Fehr attended a morning bargaining session in an early indication that negotiations had succeeded.

Team Contraction Put Off

As part of a settlement, owners were willing to agree not to contract teams through the 2006 season, a management official said on the condition he not be identified.

Hi! I am finally home again. Didn't mean to rush off like that, but, we had a small family emergency ~ all is okay now!

When I got home I found 3 envelopes waiting for me.....Yaaaaay You guys!

Thanks Alexa for matching Anne's $77.77! You have a totally beautiful heart girl!

Thanks Paula for "rounding" your donation up to such a Garthy number! You crack me up!(In the best of ways;))

Thanks Amy for being so fast at sending off your generous pledge! You are so sweet!

Dale, you did not post any specific pledge amount(if there were no strike), so whatever you'd like to donate will be terrific. Mail your donation to me, to be delivered in person with all the others.

I have to admit that when I heard the strike was called off I was relieved....keeping track of everyones pledges at 7 cents, 14 cents and those with no strike guarantees was going to be a headache to keep track of ~ I would have and could have done it, but this is cool too. Now Teammates for Kids gets the BIG money from the players AND a little something from us too!

I will keep you all posted here as the pledges come in....You guys really rock!

Received so far $116.88

I have had some p/c problems and a really wicked cold that has been keeping me down ~ between the two I have had trouble getting any time to visit PG.

Okay, on with the news......

I received checks today from LeeLee, JoAnn, Sarah, Lee, Bonnie and Marla. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH to those of you who have generously added extra to your pledge amount! You guys just bowl me over. You know who you are and I will make sure T4K does too!

Please remember to mail out your checks... even though the strike did not happen.. We believe in the miracle of children, and we still have lots of Garth work to do.
This is one time I sit with pen and check in hand and smile the whole time I am writing out my check. Thanks again, Mary Liz, thanks for helping to keep us connected!!!!

It's wonderful for Team Mates that the baseball strike didn't happen. I'm glad they worked things out...

Mary Liz... I hope your feeling better real soon. I've been sick myself for over a week now. Fevers coming and going every day...with a major headache and body aches...at one point I thought I was freezing to death and it was like 90 degrees out!
It's been going around the neighborhood here.

I'll send out the money to you within the next day or two.

there's 100 soda cans = 5.00
kitchen table change can = 18.67
skaters = 30.00
my 1 yr. = 51.10

GRAND TOTAL = $104.77

(of course I made that round off to 77) :)
I couldn't resist! LOL

Mary Liz:

Instead of mentioning names of those who haven't sent in their money to you, may I suggest that you take the matter to private email with the individuals.

There could be many reasons for people not sending in their pledge - personal, finances, etc. I don't think it's a good idea to single out individuals like this on public forums for everyone else to see.

Also, there have been numerous requests of you to let us know how the presentation of the TFK Auction money went. You have not yet replied to any of them. The total donation was pretty high for the amount of people who were at the auction, and we would all like to know what the TFK staff reaction was when you delivered the money personally. Thanks.

This dumb blonde sent mine in with my regularly monthly donation directly to TFK.

Sorry!! :( Lotta stuff going on here and seemingly more than I'm coping with the way I should. You can ask Harriet...she's in shock!! I have actually been taking care of ME lately. She totally can't believe it.

I'm so outta touch and have been so sick I don't know if I'm coming or going and trying to play catch up on everything from bills, to kids, to appointments, etc. Seems bout all I can get accomplished is sleep. I wake up, take the girls to school, I'm crashed out again by 10:00 a.m., I'll sleep anywhere from 2 to 3 hours, then I'm back up and taking care of what I have the energy for, then by 5:00 p.m or so, I'm out cold again for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Then, I'm in the bed by midnight and have to make myself get up when the clock goes off at 6:00 a.m. and start it all over again.

I did put my #71 on it and that it was for the baseball strike thingy for PG. Whatta idiot I can be...

Hugs yall!!

Da dumb blonde,

Teresa
