ABC Fires Up July 4 Special
By Paula Bernstein

NEW YORK (Variety) - Hoping to woo viewers on a traditionally low-rated night, ABC will broadcast "Independence Day 2001," a live special co-hosted by ABC News' Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson, on July 4.

The one-hour event, to air at 7 p.m. PDT, will feature a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by a cavalcade of Hollywood stars, including Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Bates, Edward Norton, Kevin Spacey and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Norman Lear, who recently acquired an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, will produce the dramatic reading, which will be the centerpiece of the ABC News special.

Live from Philadelphia, the show will also feature a performance by Garth Brooks, as well as highlights of various Independence Day celebrations from each of the 13 original colonies.

the concert segment starts at 8:30pm EST
and they are not allowing overnight "camping" for good seats.. the earliest you can arrive is 6am on the 4th. Any time sooner the Police will ask you to leave.

This is so awesome!! I NEED a Garth fix sooooo bad!!! My VCR will be set, but I will be in front of my tv watching Garth!!! What kind of crowds do you think he will bring? I know he is probably only singing a few songs, but knowing Garth if the crowd gets going he could go all night!!! Is he doing Patriotic songs, or Garth songs? Hopefully, both!

06-19-2001, 08:26 PM
Great news!!! So if it's airing at 7 p.m. PDT, that would be 10 p.m. EST, which means it won't be live if the concert is going on at 8:30 p.m. EST. Is that correct?

I will definitely have my vcr set and ready even though you can bet I will be sitting in front of the television set. I will also have to mention to everyone I know that I know GB will be on, because they will all call me during the show to tell me they see GB on television. LOL! ;)

I would expect the folks in attendance to get more Garth than the TV audience as happened during teeh original, live airing of Central Park.
