Sometimes, on the road we travel in life, we are blessed to have our paths
cross and if lucky enough, have them connect with people who enrich our lives. I was blessed to have the path I walk cross and connect with
Mrs. Colleen Carroll Brooks.
As much as I mourn her leaving this earth, more so, I want to honor and
celebrate the life she lived. I loved her dearly. I shared a part of myself
with her that I have not shared with many. She never failed to encourage, to
inspire, and to challenge me to better myself. She showed me by her example
what courage, strength and dignity really are.
The heroes and heroines in my life have been few. Those titles are reserved
for those who have truly made a difference in who and what I am. Those who
have profoundly influenced me and changed me. Proudly...I count her as my
heroine.
Most of my memories about her and with her are personal and out of respect
for her and her family, I choose to just hold them in my heart for now. This
poem is for her. Written in her honor. For the trust she always put in me.
For the lessons she taught. For the love she never failed to share. For the
hugs, the words, the laughter, and the promises I will never forget.
